Box Score KEENE, N.H. 10/16/10
– Junior forward Elizabeth Coffin
(Sugar Hill, N.H.) tied the single-game school record with
five goals, as the Keene State College field hockey team dropped
Worcester State 6-1 in Little East play on Saturday afternoon at
Owl Athletic Complex. With the win the Owls improve to 11-4 overall
and 6-2 in conference play, while the Lancers fall to 6-9 on the
year and 3-5 in league action.
Coffin's
five goals ties Kay Mulcahy (1981) and Tanya Strong (2003) in the
KSC record book. "I'm so happy to have my name on that record,"
said Coffin. "After I scored my fifth goal the announcer said it
over the speakers and I had no idea. It is a great
honor."
Coffin had a hat-trick by halftime, scoring two unassisted
markers in the game's first 15 minutes. At the 22:20 mark, junior
Aislynn
Sherry (Rehobeth, Mass.) had a nice pass to a wide
open Coffin through the circle to give KSC a 3-0 lead into the
break.
"Today my teammates did a great job of setting me up," said
Coffin. "Offensively I think we caught them off guard and every
time the ball was crossed to me I was very open."
Three minutes into the second-half, Coffin netted her fourth
goal of the game, off a nice feed from freshman forward Aimee Donaruma
(Hampden, Mass.) to give KSC a 4-0 advantage.
At the 54:01 mark, Worcester State would hit the scoreboard, as
junior forward Samantha Janda (Sterling, Mass.)
would tip a pass just past the dive of Owl goalkeeper Meghan Ledoux
(Standish, Maine) to cut the KSC lead to 4-1. Lancer
midfielder Karla Rotondi (Tewksbury, Mass.) was
credited with the assist.
Just over five minutes later, senior captain Chelsea
Blackmer (Boylston, Mass.) took a pass from senior
Leigh
Smith (Sanborton, N.H.) on a designed play off a
corner for her first goal of the season and the 5-1 lead.
With 1:20 remaining in the game, Coffin's record-tying goal came
as she stole the ball away from a Lancer defender for the breakaway
opportunity. Coffin tucked the ball into the bottom right corner,
past the dive of Lancer goalie Kat Masterjohn (Warren,
Mass.) for the 6-1 final.
The Owls outshot Worcester State 26-2 on the game and had a 7-0
advantage in penalty corners.
Ledoux and freshman netminder Courtney Hearn (New
Fairfield, Conn.) both saw time in net for the Owls.
Ledoux played 55:52 and allowed the lone Lancer goal, while Hearn
played the final 14:08 and didn't need to make a save. Masterjohn
made six saves and allowed the six goals for the Lancers in the
losing effort.
KSC returns to the field on Tuesday, as they will travel to
Salem State for a 6 p.m. Little East Conference matchup.
