KEENE, N.H. 3/11/10 – Sophomore attack Griffin Meehan
(Simsbury, Conn.) tallied six goals and two assists to lead
Keene State College to a 20-8 victory over Wheaton College in
non-conference men's lacrosse action at Owl Athletic Complex
on Thursday afternoon.
Playing its last game before heading to Florida for a couple of
spring week games, Keene State improves to 2-1. Wheaton
College (1-1) suffers its first loss of the season.
With the scored knotted at 2-all, Keene State netted the next six
goals to go up 8-2 after the first quarter. Meehan scored
three of those goals, including one on a nifty behind the back
shot. “It helped the angle, so I just tried it
out,” said Meehan, who has 16 goals in the Owls first three
games. “I practice the shot because it comes in
handy.”
The Lyons scored back-to-back goals to make it an 11-5 game late in
the second quarter, but the Owls, who, led 12-5 at the half,
answered with four consecutive goals, taking a 15-5 lead on an
unassisted goal by Meehan.
Freshmen Taylor Jette (Simsbury, Conn.),
Matt Schairer (Wrentham, Mass.), James
Galloway (Simsbury, Conn.), Ian Hart
(Richmond, N.H.) and Jonathan Roderick (Plaistow,
N.H.) each scored two goals for the Owls. Senior
Casey Barber (South Deerfield, Mass.), freshman
Matt Crimmins (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.), and junior
Cam Sousa (Hollis, N.H.) accounted for the other
KSC goals.
“”I thought the guys played pretty well,” said
KSC Coach Mark Theriault. “We're
a hard team to beat on this turf. I told the boys,
we're not on the plane yet. We have to play 60 minutes of
lacrosse before we head to Florida.”
Sophomore attack Billy McNamara (Mansfield, Mass.) scored three
goals and junior attack Chris Landers (Manchester, Mass.) finished
with a goal and four assists to lead Wheaton.
Junior Alec Corliss (Waltham, Mass.) and freshman
Jason Lesser (Brewster, N.Y.) each played a half
in goal for the Owls. Corliss made five saves while Lesser
turned aside nine shots.
Senior Schuyler Horn (New Hartford, Conn.) made 12 saves for the
Lyons.
In Florida, Keene State plays Birmingham Southern on March 14 and
10th ranked Geneseo State on March 17.
Wheaton College faces College in its home-opener on March 25.
