KEENE, N.H. 5/1/10 – The Keene State
College men's lacrosse team celebrated senior day for their
nine seniors in style, with a 21-7 victory over the Huskies of
Southern Maine on Saturday afternoon at Owl Athletic Complex. The
Owls saw 13 players with at least one point, and sophomores
Matt Schairer (Wrentham, Mass.) and
Griffin Meehan (Simsbury, Conn.) netted six and
five goals respectively, to complete a perfect 7-0 season in
LEC regular-season play and their third Little East Conference
regular season championship in program history.
The Huskies end their season at 3-11 overall and 1-6 in league
contests.
The KSC men's lacrosse program bid farewell to the senior
class of Easton Kezer (Derry, N.H.), Hunt
Barada (New Canaan, Conn.), Riley Benson (Derry,
N.H.), Casey Barber (S. Deerfield,
Mass.), Jamie LeSage (Exeter, N.H.),
Bryan Sweeney (East Lyme, Conn.), Dax
Greene (Westborough, Mass.), Nick Van Blarcom
(Sherborn, Mass.), and Kyle Barnett (Londonderry,
N.H.) before the start of the game.
USM took advantage of a slow KSC start, jumping out to a 2-0
lead on back-to-back man-up goals from Huskies junior attack
Tim Bryant (Peterborough, N.H.) with just under 12
minutes left in the first quarter.
Keene State battled back in the first, on Meehan's man-up
goal from freshman Taylor Jette (Simsbury, Conn.)
to even the game at three apiece with 53 second remaining.
The next three quarters was all KSC, outscoring USM 18-4,
including 7-1 in the second quarter, for the 21-7 victory.
Schairer had a game-high seven points, on six goals and an
assist, while Meehan finished with six points on five markers and
one helper. Junior Michael Araujo (Southborough,
Mass.) and Jette also finished with multiple goals with
two apiece.
Southern Maine was led by Bryant's six points on four
goals and two assists. Freshman midfielder Mark White
(Oakville, Ontario) was the only other Huskies player to
reach multiple points with two goals and two assists.
Junior goaltender Alec Corliss (Waltham, Mass.)
made 13 saves and allowed just seven goals in the win for the Owls.
Goalies Kyle Dussault (Lewiston, Maine) and
Jacob Groom (Cumberland, Maine) made a combined
seven saves and allowed the 21 Owl goals with Dussault taking the
loss.
KSC did well on the faceoffs, winning 19-of-31 and converted on
6-of-10 extra man opportunities, while Southern Maine went 2-for-10
with the advantage after starting out 2-for-2 in the first period.
The Owls will host the semifinal round of the Little East
Conference tournament on Thursday, May 6th at Owl Athletic Complex.
