KEENE, N.H. 10/15/11 – Freshmen Kelly Burrell (Cumberland, Me.) scored two goals, the first two of her college career, to lead the Keene State College women's soccer team to a 4-0 Little East Conference shutout victory over Rhode Island College at Owl Athletic Complex on Saturday.
Riding a season high five game winning streak, Keene State (11-5, 5-0 LEC) remains on top of the LEC standings. Rhode Island College (2-12, 0-5 LEC) has dropped its last 12 games and is still searching for its first LEC win.
The Owls, who peppered the RIC net with 45 shots, scored all of their goals in the second half. Taking a crossing pass from sophomore Hayley Kenyon (Exeter, R.I.), Burrell redirected the ball into the far corner of the net to give KSC a 1-0 lead 10 minutes into the half.
RIC sophomore goalie Abygayle Fisher (Exeter, N.H.) kept it a one goal game with a diving save on a close-range bid by KSC senior Sia Karamourtopoulos (Fremont, N.H.). Minutes later, the Anchormen, who finished with three shots, had their best chance to get on the board, but sophomore Lauren Maisano's (Bristol, R.I.) shot hit the side of the net with KSC senior goalie Megan Dempsey (East Weymouth, Mass.) out of position.
Keene State scored three goals in a span of five minutes to pull away from the Anchorwomen. Sophomore Jessica Berthiaume (Worcester, Mass.) made it a 2-0 game at the 76:49 mark when she corralled a loose ball in the box and fired it into the top corner, tying her for the team lead with her seventh goal of the season. Less than four minutes later sophomore Brittany Boscarino (Ellington, Conn.) put a well-placed ball just inside the left post for her first goal of the season. "I beat my defender and I just went for it," she said. "I had some earlier chances and wasn't able to find the back of the net , so I knew I had to finish."
Burrell completed the scoring just over a minute later when she broke in alone and buried a low, hard drive into the corner of the net for her second goal of the game. "It took awhile, but it was nice to get a couple of goals today," said Burrell. "Everybody told me I was going to score. It just took time. Hopefully there are many more goals to come."
"We created a lot of opportunities, but if you're not going to put them in the back of the net, you're not going to win games," said KSC Coach Denise Lyons. "In the second half, we played hard and we finished. "You can't take any team lightly."
Dempsey, who played the first 83:57 and made one save, and freshman Victoria Crenson (North Salem, N.Y.) shared the shutout in goal for the Owls, who tallied their ninth shutout of the season. Crenson wasn't credited with a save in her 6:03 between the pipes.
Fisher had a busy day in goal for RIC, finishing with 20 saves. Freshman Audrey Maia (Norton, Mass.) played the final 6:05 of the first half and stopped two shots.
