NEW LONDON, CONN. 11/12/11- The Keene State College women's volleyball team saw its season come to an end with a 3-0 loss to U.S. Coast Guard Academy in the semifinals of the ECAC New England tournament at New London, Conn. on Saturday.
Looking to defend their ECAC championship, the fourth seeded Owls had a tough time getting untracked against the top-seeded Bears, dropping the first two game 25-14 and 25-19. KSC gave USCGA all in could handle in the third game before falling 25-23. "They ran stuff we haven't seen all season," said KSC Coach Bob Weiner. They're a quality team."
Junior Keriann Mason had a match-high 11 kills and a team-high eight digs while sophomore Kelsey DePorto finished with ten kills and a match-high eight blocks to lead Coast guard to the win. The Bears a perfect 12-0 at home and 25-6 overall will play the winner of the semifinal match against second seed Plymouth State and third seed Endicott for the championship at 5 p.m.
Seniors Bridget O'Bryant (Merrimack, N.H.) with six kills and 10 digs and Kristen Girard (Red Hook, N.Y.), who finished with six kills and five digs led the Owls. Senior Ellyse Davis (Londonderry, N.H.) chipped in with five kills while senior setter Laurie Whalen (Niantic, Conn.) had 20 assists. The trio along with seniors Madison McHugh (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) and Braelen O'Toole (Derry, N.H.) were playing their last college match for the Owls. Junior Alex Lehocky (Edgewood, N.M.) also had a match-high 13 digs for Keene State.
Keene State finished its season with a 19-14 record. "I'm not disappointed," said Weiner. "We improved the schedule and played some of the top teams in the region. We held court against most of our opponents, but I think we were waiting all season to beat one of those top teams. Unfortunately, it just didn't happen for us."
