Box Score Williamstown, Mass. 12/7/11 – Led by a game-high 22 points from sophomore center Michael Mayer (Durham, North Carolina), the No. 8 ranked Williams College Ephs rolled past the Keene State College Owls 103-74 on Wednesday night at Chandler Gymnasium.
The Ephs (7-1), winners of six straight, shot the ball well all night, finishing the contest 35-for-55 from the field (63.6%) and also hitting 12-of-20 attempts from beyond the arc (60%). KSC (5-2) finished 25-of-61 on the night (41%) and was 11-of-29 from three point distance (38%).
Senior Derek D'Amours (Agawam, Mass.) and juniors Ryan Martin (Wayne, Maine) and Anthony Mariano (Naugatuck, Conn.) combined to total 56 of Keene State's 74 points on the night. D'Amours led all Keene scorers with 20 points, while Martin and Mariano each finished with 18 points in the losing effort.
Mayer came off the bench and finished the contest perfect from the floor, shooting 10-of-10 from the field and 2-of-2 from the charity stripe while also pulling down seven rebounds. Senior guard James Wang (Sydney, Australia) totaled 21 points and a game-high nine rebounds for Williams in the victory.
After taking an early two point lead 15 second into the contest on a jumper from Martin, Williams opened up their lead to a safe distance.
With just six and a half minutes remaining in the first half, Mayer's jumper gave the Ephs their biggets lead of the half at 44-20. KSC outscored Williams 18-11 the rest of the half, capped by a jumper in the paint from D'Amours to make it 55-38 at the halftime break.
The Owls came roaring out of the locker room, draining a pair of three balls from Mariano and Martin to cut the Ephs lead to 57-44. After Wang front-rimmed a three ball for Williams, the Owls had a chance to cut the lead to ten, but Martin's three went in-and-out, and the Owls would never recover.
Williams would open the lead up to as many as 30, on a pair of free throws from sophomore forward Taylor Epley (Louisville, Kentucky) with 2:18 to play to make it 102-72, as the hosts would end up with the 103-74 victory.
The Owls are now 1-4 all time against Williams College including a 0-3 record at Chandler Gymnasium.
Keene State returns to action Saturday, as they will travel to UMass Boston for a 3 p.m. start for their final Little East contest of the first semester.
