NCAA Cross Country Championships: Fitter comes up short in All-America bid

TERRE HAUTE, IND.  11/17/12 – Maggie Fitter knew the odds were against her, but that didn't stop the senior from Branford, Conn., from putting her best foot forward in a bid to earn All-America honors at the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships held on the LaVerne Gibson Course in Terre Haute, Indiana on Saturday.

Coming up short in her All-American (Top-35) bid, Fitter finished 95th on the challenging 6K course, posting a time of 22:45.

Fitter got locked in the middle of the pack early and was never able to move up in the talented field. "It was a very intense course.  There a lot of up and downs," said Fitter. "I just tried to run with a group, but I really didn't know who I was around."

"It definitely wasn't my best race, but getting out here was an experience in itself," Fitter added.  "Being in to the top-35 might have been a little ambitious for me. It's sad that my college cross country career has come to an end, but I was glad to finish it on such a historical course."

Fitter was looking to become the ninth women's cross country All-America at Keene State.  Mary Proulx won the honors three times (2000-02) and Paige Mills earned the recognition the past two years.

John's Hopkins (MD) University won the women's team championship with 158 points while North Central (Ill.) College captured the men's title with 157 points.
