ECAC Quarterfinals: Kenyon goal lifts Owls over Falcons 1-0

Box Score

KEENE, N.H.  11/8/12 – Junior Hayley Kenyon's (Exeter, R.I.) goal midway in the second half lifted second seed Keene State College to a 1-0 shutout win over seventh seed Albertus Magnus (Conn.) College in a ECAC New England Women's Soccer Tournament  game played at chilly Owl Athletic Complex on Thursday night.

Keene State (13-9-1) advances to the semifinals where they will play third seed Endicott College (13-6-1). Endicott defeated sixth seed Emmanuel College 2-0 in its quarterfinal game on Wednesday.  Top seed University of St. Joseph will play fifth seed Colby-Sawyer College in the second semifinal game.  The University of St. Joseph in West Hartford will host the semifinal and final rounds of the tournament on Saturday and Sunday respectively. The Keene State game against Endicott will be played on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

The Owls had numerous chances to get on the board in the first half.  Moving up on a corner kick,  senior Jane Walsh's (Portsmouth, R.I.) shot just went over the cross bar.  The Falcons' defense kept it a scoreless game.  Junior Shannon Skidmore (Terryville, Conn.) blocked a shot by junior Alex Haley (Laconia, N.H.) and Albertus Magnus junior goalie Christina Dineson (Milford, Conn.) got a hand on a crossing ball off the foot of junior Beverly Cole (Madbury, N.H.).

Kenyon peppered the Falcon net with several shots before getting her goal.  She sailed a couple of balls just over the crossbar before finally finding the back of the net.

Cole rocketed a shot off the cross bar and Kenyon put in the rebound to give KSC a 1-0 lead at the 65:40 mark.  It was Kenyon's team leading 13th goal of the season.

Kenyon almost got her second goal of the game a few minutes later.  Temporally out of position, Dineson was able to scamper back into the play and make a diving save on Kenyon's bid.

Albertus Magnus senior Danielle Figueroa (Bridgeport, Conn.) had a couple of chances to tie the game later in the half.  Breaking in from the right side Figueroa was just beaten to the ball by KSC sophomore goalie Torrie Crenson (North Salem.).  Figueroa's shot with 1:58 to play went just wide of the far post.

Keene State had a wide 20-9 advantage in shots and 7-3 lead in corner kicks.

Crenson finished the game with five saves to notch her third shutout of the season.  Dineson had a busy night in goal for the Falcons, stopping 12 shots.

It was the first meeting between the two teams.

Keene State is making its 13th appearance in the ECAC tournament.  The Owls captured the championship three times (2005, 2009, and 2010).
