Box Score PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (Sept. 1, 2012) – Keene State Women's Soccer Coach Denise Lyons didn't have to wait long to notch her 300th career victory. Her Owls team took care of that with their 6-0 shutout opening season win over Lyndon (Vt.) State in the opening round of the Cardinal Classic Tournament in Plattsburgh, N.Y. on Saturday.
"It's great to reach the milestone," said Lyons, now in her 21st season at Keene State. "The program has consistently had winning seasons during my tenure, and I've very proud of that."
Lyons points out that her assistant coach Sarah Testo has been with her throughout her time on the sidelines. "I got my first 100 wins when Sarah was a player and the last 200 wins when she was a coach," said Lyons.
Keene State got a pair of goals from junior Brittany Boscarino (Ellington, Conn.) to lead KSC over Lyndon State in the second game of the Cardinal Classic.
Senior Joan Hamel (Weare, N.H.) put the Owls on the board in the sixth minute with an unassisted goal. Junior Jessica Berthiaume (Worcester, Mass,) made it 2-0 at 12:31 from sophomore Alex Haley (Lacnia, N.H.) before two quick goals from junior Kara Pavlidis (Lee, N.H.) and Hayley Kenyon (Exeter, R.I.) gave Keene State a 4-0 lead. Boscarino's header off a cross found the back of the net in the 37th minute to give the Owls a comfortable lead at halftime.
Boscarino scored the lone goal of the second half in the 83rd minute with a short tap-in from three yards out.
"We played really well, regardless of the opponent," said Lyons. "The intensity level was high and I was able to get everyone playing time."
Keene State outshot Lyndon State, 23-2, and took eight corner kicks while the Hornets finished the day with two.
Lyndon State goalie Adele Zeh made 11 saves in the loss. Keene State split time between goaltenders sophomore Victoria Crenson (North Salem, N.Y.) and freshman Kathyrn Hoar (Plymouth, Mass.) . Crenson was credited with the win while Hoar recorded one save in the second half.
Lyndon State will face Johnson State in the consolation game at 11 a.m. while the Owls of Keene State will square off against the Cardinals at 1:30 p.m. for the tournament championship.
Renee Egan scored two goals as the Plattsburgh State women's soccer team defeated Johnson State, 5-0, in the first game of the Tournament.
