Plattsburgh State edges Owls 2-1 in Cardinal Tournament Championship

Box Score

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (Sept. 2, 2012) – Despite some late pressure from Keene State College, the Plattsburgh State women's soccer team was able to hang on for a 2-1 win against the Owls to take the 2012 Cardinal Classic Championship Sunday at the Field House Soccer Complex.

The two teams battling for the title matched up well, playing a scoreless first half. Plattsburgh State (2-0-0) began the second half with an outstanding scoring opportunity when Kayla Rabideau rang a shot off the post in the 50th minute. The Cardinals finally broke through at 56:34 when Cammey Keyser got her first collegiate goal on a header from two yards out off a cross by Lauren Gonyea.

Kristie Pageau tapped a ball into the box for Ashley McKennelly, who made a nice move around a Keene State (1-1-0) defender to pick up the pass. McKennelly drove the ball across the box to Cassidy Clavet, who fired a shot from just outside the ten-yard box to beat Owls' sophomore goaltender Victoria Crenson (North Salem, N.Y.)  at 62:14.

Junior forward Hayley Kenyon (Exeter, R.I.) made it a one-goal game with her second of the season in the 66th minute with a short tap-in from less than two yards out. Junior forward Jessica Berthiaume (Worcester, Mass.) assisted on Keene State's lone goal.

"We had our chances to win, but couldn't finish our opportunities," said KSC Coach Denise Lyons.  "It's disappointing because we could've beat them."

Both teams finished the day with 12 shots and two corner kicks. Crenson took the loss for the Owls with three saves. Plattsburgh's Monica D'Ippolito earned her second win of the year, also making three stops.

Pageau was named Offensive Most Valuable Player while Cardinal freshman Hannah Saccocio was honored as the Defensive Most Valuable Player. Plattsburgh's Cassidy Clavet and Macee Maddock were named to the All-Tournament Team, joining Keene State's Kenyon and senior back Jane Walsh (Portsmouth, R.I.) and Johnson State's Katja Langmaid.

Johnson State defeated Lyndon State 1-0 in double-overtime to win the tournament's consolation game.

The Owls return to action Wednesday when they host Westfield State in their home opener. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m.
