Owls defeat ECSU and fall to WNEU in Tri-Match

            KEENE, N.H. 9/22/12 – The Keene State College women's volleyball team split its two matches at Spaulding Gym on Saturday.  The Owls (6-8, 2-0 LEC) defeated Eastern Conn. State 3-0 and lost a 3-1 non-conference match to Western New England University. In the third match of the day, WNEU won a five game match 3-2 over ECSU.

            "It couldn't be a better day for us," said KSC Coach Bob Weiner.  We got the conference win we needed and learned a tremendous amount."

The Owls swept the Warriors 25-16, 25-20 and 25-18 in the first match of the day.

            Freshman Angela Silveri (Poughquag, N.Y.) led the Owls 10 kills.  Sophomore Sammy Dormio (Leesburg, Va.) had a fine overall match with four kills, 10 digs and two blocks.  KSC had a strong defensive match.  Freshmen Kaitlin Boyer (West Greenwich, R.I.) and Alexis Michal (Windham, N.H.) finished with 13 and 12 digs respectively.

            Senior Katie Wilson (Pittsburgh, Ca.) led the Warriors (5-8, 0-2 LEC) with nine kills, four digs and one block. Junior Nicki Gasch (New Fairfield, Conn.) added eight kills while sophomore setter Allie Henry (Middletown, Conn.) finished with 20 assists and seven digs.

            Western New England improved to 11-1 with its win over the Owls. The Golden Bears won the first game 25-13.  KSC came back to win a close second game 25-23.  WNEU took the final two games 25-17 and 25-18.

            Silveri had another strong performance against WNEU, finishing with a season high 16 kills to go with four digs and one block.  Dormio tallied five kills and 14 digs while Boyer had a team-high 20 digs in the match.

            Freshman Emily McGran (Lakewood, Ill.) had 16 kills and Kelsey Armstrong (Groton, Conn.) finished with 11 kills to lead the WNEU offense.  Sophomore Grace Kucharski (Avon, Conn.) led the defense with 21 digs while senior setter Heather Mears (Amherst, Mass.) had 37 assists.

            Keene State will be at Southern Vermont on Thursday (7 p.m.).
