Box Score KEENE, N.H. 9/27/12 – After failing to connect with her teammates on several corner kick opportunities earlier in the game, Brittany Boscarino (Ellington, Conn.) took matters into her own hands in overtime.
The junior midfielder's low kick from the left corner somehow found its way thought the traffic in front and into the net at the 5:12 mark of the extra period to give the Keene State College women's soccer team a 3-2 non-conference win over Worcester State University in Keene on Thursday night.
"We had our chances. I was glad I was finally able to put one in," said Boscarino, who is tied for the team lead with five goals. "Somehow it got by everyone and went in. It was awesome."
After starting the season 1-5, the Owls (5-5) have reeled off four straight wins to get back to the .500 mark. Worcester State (4-4) saw its two game winning streak come to an end.
After a scoreless first half, Keene State took a 1-0 lead at the 63:11 mark when junior Kristen Huckin's (Westmoreland, N.H.) direct kick from the right side went untouched and landed in the back of the net.
Freshman Kaitlyn Coelho (Ludlow, Mas.) tied the game six minutes later when she blasted a loose ball into the far corner of the net.
Junior Jessica Berthiaume (Worcester, Mass.) gave the Owls the lead back in the see-saw game at the 72:40 mark. Taking a lead pass form junior Hayley Kenyon (Exeter, R.I.), Berthiaume was able to get her foot free and slip the ball past WSU freshman goalie Mia Koutoulas (Danvers, Mass.) to put the Owls up 2-1.
The lead wouldn't last for long. The Lancers knotted the score four minutes later. Freshman Alicia Macomber (Stoughton, Mass.) beat an Owl defender down the right side and crossed the ball over to junior Laura Maunsell (Medford, Mass.) for the equalizer.
"They were very quick," said KSC junior back Kelsie Bailey (Barre, Vt.). "They play a different style so we had to get used to it."
Bailey made a key defensive play early in the second half when she was able to track down Lancer senior Brianne Beckman (Lakeville, Mass.) who had broken free and going in on a breakaway. "I just try to do my on in the back," said Bailey.
Koutoulas, who had 13 saves, robbed KSC freshman Shannon Summers (Keene, N.H) with a diving save with 2:30 to play in regulation play.
Although KSC at times controlled large portions of the game, Worcester State took advantage of their opportunities. KSC outshot the Lancers 32-11 and had an 8-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Sophomore Torrie Crenson (North Salem, N.Y.) finished the game with six saves for the Owls.
Keene State avenged its defeat to the Lancers in last year's ECAC Division III New England Championship that was settled in a shootout.
Both teams return to conference play on Saturday. The owls host rival Plymouth State (1 p.m.) and the Lancers travel to Westfield State (6 p.m.).
