Box Score NEW LONDON, N.H. – 10/22/13- The Keene State women's volleyball team earned a 3-1 comeback victory at Colby-Sawyer in non-conference action on Tuesday evening. The Owls won by scores of 18-25, 25-16, 25-16 and 25-21.
The Owls improve to 15-12, while Colby-Sawyer falls to 17-9. "I thought it's the best we played in over a month," said KSC Coach Bob Weiner. We beat a very good team."
Keene junior Sammy Dormio (Leesburg, Va.) recorded her 1000th career dig in the fourth set after collecting a team best 21 in tonight's match.
The first set was controlled by Colby-Sawyer's offense, which had 12 kills and hit .310. The Chargers' lead ballooned to 11 points at 18-7 thanks to a 7-2 run capped by blocks from senior Emilee McBride (Strafford, N.H.) and junior Jackie Keating (Marshfield, Mass.). The Owls scored a few points late, but fell 25-16 after an attack error by sophomore Christine Hadfield (Waterford, Conn.).
Keene rallied with a strong second set to even the match at 1-1. The first third of the set was evenly played and was 8-8 after an ace by Colby-Sawyer's Sarah Hannon (Pocasset, Mass.). From that point, the Owls slowly pulled away and were aided by numerous errors by the Chargers, including one that gave the visitors their biggest lead of the set at 19-9 and three others to close the set 25-16.
The third set featured an impressive offensive output by Keene en route to a 25-16 win. The Owls hit .324 and tallied 16 kills in the set. Hadfield led all players in the set with six. After a kill by Jackie Keating pulled the Chargers within two at 10-8, Keene rattled off nine straight points, capped by blocks from Hadfield and sophomore Madeline Nossiff (Portsmouth, N.H.), to put the set out of reach.
The fourth set was a close contest throughout and featured six ties and three lead changes. The Chargers continued to struggle on offense and committed nine errors in the set leading to the 25-21 Keene victory. Sophomore Angela Silveri (Poughquog, N.Y.) hit the match-clinching kill and had seven of Keene's 12 kills in the set.
Silveri finished with a team best 13 kills and added 18 digs for the Owls. Christine Hadfield also reached double-figures with 10 kills. Sophomore setter Alexis Michal (Windham, N.H.) collected 23 assists.
Keating was the lone Charger in double-digits with 13 kills. She added 12 digs for her fifth double-double of the season. Setter Laura Smolinksi (Hebron, Conn.) also recorded her fifth double-double of the year with 30 assists and 16 digs. Senior Ally Le-Bruno (Medfield, Mass.) had a match-high 28 digs.
Colby-Sawyer travels to Johnson State on Saturday to play Lyndon and the host Badgers. Keene plays a tri-match at UMass Dartmouth with Wesleyan (Conn.).
