Owl hoop teams host Western Conn. on Monday; KSC Women to have 'Think Pink' game

KEENE, N.H. 2/8/13 – Tired of hanging around the house, apartment or dorm watching coverage of the snow storm, movies or videos?  Then head over to Spaulding Gym on Monday for a Little East Conference basketball doubleheader between Keene State College and Western Conn. State University.

The Keene State women's basketball team (9-13, 3-8 LEC) will go up against Western Conn. at 5:30 p.m. while the Keene State men(14-8, 8-3 LEC) are scheduled to tip-off against the Colonials at 7:30 p.m.

A couple of fund-raising activities will be taking place at Spaulding Gym on Sunday.  Between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., members of the Keene State men's and women's soccer teams will be collecting items (shoes and towels) in the gym parking lot for  the Keene High School Interact Club to bring down to El Salvador.

In addition, the Keene State women's basketball will be teaming up with WCSU to host its annual "Think Pink" charitable event to help raise awareness and collect charitable donations for cancer research and prevention.

Originally scheduled for Saturday, the basketball twinbill was pushed back to Sunday due to the storm. "We're all creatures of habit, but the extra day helps us a little bit because it's a three-game week for us and the kids are tired," said KSC Women's Coach Keith Boucher. "Hopefully we'll get enough rest, so we'll have our legs for Sunday."

Boucher said Western Conn is a tough match-up for his team.  "They're very well coached and they have they some seniors that want it," Boucher said.   "They are probably playing the best basketball in our conference right now."

Western Conn. defeated the Owls 62-43 back on Jan. 8 in Danbury, Conn.

Keene State Men's Coach Rob Colbert says his Owls will be facing a Western Conn. different team than the one they defeated 85-72 earlier this season with many of their players returning from injuries.   "Although the record doesn't show it, they're playing much more together," Colbert said.  "They're extremely athletic and their really big.  With injuries to our big-men, we have to hunker down and play post by committee and have everyone hit the boards.   It's something we've done alright with the last few games, but Western will definitely put that to the test."

Currently third in the LEC standings, the Owls, who have won four out of their last five games, are playing for seeding in the upcoming conference tournament.  Colbert said he doesn't' worry about that. "I let other people talk about that," he said. "I'm not smart enough to figure it all out.  I just coach my team."
