Box Score KEENE, N.H. 8/31/13 – Seniors Hayley Kenyon (Exeter, R.I.) and Brittany Boscarino (Ellington, Conn.) netted second half goals to lead the Keene State women's soccer team to an opening season 3-1 come-from-behind win over St. John Fisher College of Rochester, N.Y. at Owl Athletic Complex on Saturday.
Winning a battle for the ball with Keene State back Kelsie Bailey (Barre, Vt.), senior Chelsea Oberkrieser (Iroquois, N.Y.) gave St. John Fisher a 1-0 lead at the 34:31 mark of the first half when she slid the ball into the far corner of the net.
Keene State had a chance to tie the game came with 17:15 to go in the half. Senior Bev Cole (Madbury, N.H.) was set up in front, but her shot sailed just over the crossbar.
Keene State got the equalizer with just 2:21 to play in the half when senior Jessica Berthiaume (Worcester, Mass.) lofted a shot from 30-yards out just over the out-stretch hands of Cardinal senior goalie Noel Peck (Liverpool, N.Y.) and into the net.
Keene State had the better of the play in the second half. Berthiaume came close to giving the Owls a lead early in the half, but her header clanged off the far post.
A couple of seniors hooked up for the go-ahead goal at the 29:56 mark. Collecting a short through ball from Boscarino, Kenyon put the Owls up 2-1 with a shot from the left wing that nestled into the far corner of the net. "I was hoping someone would knock it in, but it floated into the top left corner. I didn't expect that to happen," said Kenyon about her goal. "It was a great win and a great way to set the tone for the season."
Boscarino made it 3-1 two minutes later with a rocket that dipped into the far right corner of the net. "I just beat my defender and hit and found the back of the net. It was awesome," said Boscarino.
Junior Torrie Crenson (North Salem, N.Y.) made three saves for Keene State. Peck finished with four saves for the Cardinals (0-2). "It took us awhile to figure out what they were doing up frot, but once we figured out we were able to settle down and play our game," said Bailey.
Keene State hosts Endicott College next Saturday (1:30 p.m.).
