BRISTOL, R.I.--The Keene State College swimming and diving teams opened the 2014-15 season at a dual meet at Roger Williams University on Saturday afternoon.
The KSC men won all 16 events they competed in, en route to a 230-61 victory over the Hawks, while the Owl women won 13 races to defeat Roger Williams 183-105.
KSC's men's squad swept the top two spots in the 400 medley relay to open the meet, with the foursome of Chris DiGiacomo, Nathan Shepard, Cole Hogg, and Greg Youngstrom winning in 3:33.96, followed by the quartet of Bobby McDowell, Randy Dunton, Shahar Resman, and Ryan Boraski in 3:39.51.
Christopher Deegan marked his collegiate debut with a win in the 1,000 freestyle, with a time of 9:54.59, while Resman and Boraski ran 1-2 in the 200 free, with Resman winning in 1:46.06 and Boraski in 1:48.03.
McDowell and Dunton were separated by half a second in the 100 backstroke, with McDowell touching in at 53.96, and Dunton in 54.51 seconds. There was another close finish in the 100 breaststroke, where Shepard edged out the Hawks' David Kitchen by less than a second, in 1:00.73.
Hogg won the 200 fly in 1:59.40, just in front of Resman in 2:00.39, while Youngstrom won the 50 free in 21.60. Boraski and Youngstrom went 1-2 in the 100 free, with Boraski in 48.03 and Youngstrom in 48.23, while McDowell and Dunton did the same in the 200 backstroke, with McDowell in 1:59.72 and Dunton in 2:01.02.
Shepard added to his win total in the 200 breaststroke in 2:16.00, as did Resman in the 500 free in 4:52.87, and Hogg in the 100 fly in 54.26. DiGiacomo won the 200 IM in 2:01.39. The Owls closed out the day as they began it, taking the 200 free relay with Boraski, DiGiacomo, Hogg, and Greg Youngstrom in 1:28.45.
Cody Fitzgerald won both diving events, scoring 223.50 on the 1-meter board, and 219.40 on the 3-meter board.
The KSC women also began with a win in the 400 medley relay on the women's side, with Taylor Dasilva, Diana Pimer, Caitlyn Shea, and Alison Bartlett clocking in at 4:04.04. Hope Walsh dominated the 1,000 freestyle in 10:47.72, more than 20 seconds ahead of RWU's Shannon Earley, while Pimer claimed a win in the 100 breaststroke in 1:08.50.
Amber Long won the 200 fly in 2:17.06, while Bartlett won the 50 free in 24.45, and the 100 free in 54.35. Pimer picked up another win in the 200 breast, touching the wall in 2:28.77, while Walsh and Shea claimed the top two places in the 500 free in 5:20.77 and 5:25.49, respectively.
Long finished first in the 100 fly in 1:02.05, likewise Pimer in the 200 IM in 2:13.46. Dasilva, Olivia Gallugi, Madison Sestak, and Barlett all combined on the 200 free relay team that finished first in 1:41.59.
Jessica Beler won the 1-meter dive with a score of 178.95, while Shelby Iava took the 3-meter dives, scoring 172.70.
Both teams return to the pool next weekend, taking part in the WPI Invitational.
