Box Score KEENE, N.H.--One of the wildest finishes in recent memory gave the Keene State College women's soccer team a 1-0, double-overtime win over Western Connecticut State University on Senior Day at Owl Athletic Complex.
In a span of less than 10 seconds, the Owls went from looking at a potential defeat to giving the league leaders their first Little East Conference loss of the season.
With 2:44 left in the second overtime, the Colonials were awarded a penalty kick. Sarah Menta stepped up, but KSC senior Torrie Crenson was equal to the challenge, diving to her right to snuff out the spot kick.
The Owls immediately raced upfield, where the ball fell to Morgan Kathan, who turned on the jets before burying her first collegiate goal with 2:38 to play.
The win gives KSC a record of 10-8 overall, with a 4-2 mark in the Little East Conference. Western Connecticut, which lost for the first time since September 17, is now 12-5-1, with a 5-1 LEC record.
The game was short on chances before the crazy ending - the Owls' best chance came three minutes after halftime, when Shannon Hart's shot was cleared off the line.
The Colonials had started to turn on the pressure as time ticked away in the second half, but Crenson stopped Stacy Weinberg's close range header, and Natalie Diaz shot over the bar in the final minutes.
Western Connecticut had the best chance in the first overtime as well, as Menta found herself 1-v-1 with Crenson, but sidefooted her shot over the crossbar.
One minute after KSC's Taylor Farland shot wide, the Colonials were awarded the penalty kick. But Crenson and Kathan's heroics gave KSC a win that will live long in the memory.
Crenson finished with six saves, while WCSU counterpart Jill Fernandez had three stops.
Before the game, the Owls honored seven contributors to the team on Senior Day. Holly Bourassa, Kate Piersiak, Beverly Cole, Alex Haley, Maggie Grayson, and Torrie Crenson, as well as assistant coach Vicki Tarabelli were all recognized.
Keene State will remain at home for their next contest, hosting Westfield State at 7 p.m. on October 29. The Colonials travel to Stevens Tech on the same day.
