Box Score

KEENE, N.H.--Tom Doyle led five players in double-figures as the Keene State College men's basketball team beat UMass Boston 107-97 in the Little East Conference opener for both teams on Saturday at Spaulding Gym.

The Owls are still undefeated, with a record of 7-0 and 1-0 in the LEC, while the Beacons are 6-2, and 0-1 in the LEC.

Doyle finished with 23 points, connecting on all 10 of his foul shots, and passed out five assists.  Nate Howard had 16 points and nine rebounds, Jaquel Edward had 15 points and nine more rebounds, Lucas Hammel had 13 points, seven assists, and four steals, and Matt Ozzella had 14 points off the bench.

KSC roared out to an enourmous lead, scoring the first 15 points of the game as Nate Howard powered home a slam dunk, and Doyle sandwiched a pair of three pointers around another from Hammel.  Edwards put back his own miss with 15:28 on the clock to cap the KSC burst.

UMass Boston countered with a run of their own, outscoring KSC 21-6 over the next five minutes to cut the Owl lead to 22-21.

The Beacons took the lead for the first time on a jumper by Layo Medina with 8:57 left in the first half. KSC slowly inched back in front, as Doyle fed Howard for a layup on the next KSC possession to take the lead, and Hammel set up Dizel Wright for a layup with 7:09 to go.

Doyle nailed another three with 1:44 left in the half to put KSC up 49-41, and the Owls led 52-44 at the break on Ozzella's free throw with a minute left.

KSC started to turn on the gas in the second half, as Hammel fed Wright for a layupw with 16:09 to go, and Wright stole the ensuing inbounds pass and scored again for a 68-55 lead.

Hammel's layup with 1:38 to play made it 103-87, and the Beacons finished the game on a 10-4 run to get the final margin within 10.

UMass Boston's Carl Joseph led all players with 33 points, shooting 13-of-17 from the field and pulling down eight rebounds.  Gregory Young and Layo Medina each had 18 for the Beacons, while Karl Agenor had 14.

The Beacons shot 55.6% from the field for the game.

The Owls will have one more game before the holiday break, entertaining Southern Maine in an LEC contest at 3 p.m. on Saturday, December 13.  The Beacons host Pine Manor College on December 11 at 7 p.m.
