Keene State Pulls Away Late, Tops WCSU 91-78

Box Score

DANBURY, Conn.--The Keene State College men's basketball team ended the game on a 17-4 run en route to a 91-78 Little East Conference road win over Western Connecticut State University on Tuesday night.

KSC improves to 10-2 this season, and 3-1 in the LEC.  The Colonials are 9-4 overall, with a 2-2 LEC mark.

Tom Doyle led KSC with 22 points, connecting on 12 of 15 foul shots.  Nate Howard had his second double-double in as many games with 14 points and 13 rebounds, while Jaquel Edwards had 11 points and Nate Stitchell chipped in 10 off the bench.

The Colonials' Luis Bridtter led all players with 26 points, while adding eight rebounds.  Bobby Bynum was the only other WCSU player in double-figures, with 14 points.

In the second half, the margin never became greater than four until the final minutes.  Stitchell's layup with 8:54 remaining in the game put the Owls up 68-64, only to see the Colonials tie it at 68 on two free throws by Starks.  Jeff Lunn's short hoop at the 5:08 mark again restored a four point advantage, but WCSU responded again, with Kendall Marquez draining an NBA range three pointer to tie the game.

Lucas Hammel's old fashioned three point play with 3:24 to go gave the Owls the lead for good.  Lunn put back a miss by Doyle for an 82-76 lead, and KSC never looked back, taking their biggest lead on Matt Ozzella's bucket with nine seconds to play.

After Marquez' three, the Colonials were just 1-for-6 from the field in the final 4:07, getting just a jumper and two free throws from Bynum, while committing four of their 26 turnovers in that stretch.

Until KSC's decisive run, the game was neck-and-neck.  KSC took an early 10-6 lead when Howard converted a three point play, but the Colonials responded with eight of the next nine points capped by a pair of Bridtter free throws at the 13:55 mark of the first half.

Claudy Cassius boosted Western Connecticut State's lead to 21-15 by putting back Bynum's miss, but Stitchell responded with a three on KSC's next possession to halve the deficit and kick start a 12-4 run that culminated with a three from Doyle with 8:52 to play.

Phil Starks' layup gave WCSU a 44-38 lead with 2:27 left before halftime, but needed Bridtter's free throws to take a 46-44 halftime lead.

The Owls conclude a four game set of road contest by traveling to Fitchburg State University on Thursday night.  Western Conn. St. plays Connecticut College.
