Survive and Advance: Men's Basketball Outlasts Western Connecticut State To Reach LEC Semis

Box Score

KEENE, N.H.--The two highest scoring teams in the Little East Conference did not disappoint, as the No. 4 seeded Keene State College men's basketball team reached the semifinals of the LEC championship tournament with a 101-99 win over No. 5 seed Western Connecticut State University on Tuesday at Spaulding Gym.

The Owls improve to 18-8, and will play at top seed Eastern Connecticut State University on Friday night in Willimantic.  The Colonials see their season come to an end at 14-12.

Tom Doyle scored a career high 35 points, with three assists and three blocked shots. while Matt Ozzella had a double-double with 15 points, and 14 rebounds.  Nate Stitchell scored a season high 16 points in 18 minutes off the bench, and Dizel Wright added 14 points, five rebounds, and four steals.

Luis Briddter led six Colonials in double-figures with 21 points.  Tony Seldon and Phil Starks each added 17, Kendall Marquez had 16, and Jimmy Louissant and Jeremiah Washington both had 11.

KSC led by as many as 12 in the second half, but the Colonials staged a massive comeback to set themselves up for one final shot to win or send the game to overtime.

The Owls went up 72-63 as Doyle was fouled on a three point attempt, and the ball bounced up off the back of the rim, then dropped in.  The senior sank the free throw for what would be his second four point play of the night.

Back-to-back threes from Seldon and Washington trimmed a 77-67 lead to four points, and WCSU got within three on another triple from Starks to make it an 89-86 game with 2:14 to play.

Doyle converted a three point play and Stitchell sank a layup, to put KSC back up by seven, only to see Briddter connect on a jumper to make it 96-93.  Wright scored on one end for KSC, but Louissant was fouled on a three point attempt and made all three shots to cut the gap to 98-96.

After Stitchell made two free throws, Seldon drained another three to make it a one point game (100-99), and the Colonials immediately fouled Doyle, who made the first but missed the second with 2.6 seconds to go.

WCSU's inbounds play got the ball to midcourt, but Seldon dribbled the ball off his foot and time expired.

The first half featured plenty of offense as well, as Western Connecticut took a 23-17 lead on Washington's layup, but KSC used a 9-2 run featuring a three point play from Stitchell to take a 26-25 lead.

Doyle converted a four point play with 1:18 to go in the first half and Nate Howard's layup gave KSC a 45-44 lead, but Starks knocked down a jumper with two seconds left in the half for a 46-45 WCSU lead at halftime.
