Field Hockey Wraps Up Top Seed With 2-0 Win Over Worcester State

WORCESTER, Mass.--Brittney Cardente and Jensyn Dandeneau scored 17 seconds apart to give the Keene State College field hockey team a 2-0 Little East Conference win over Worcester State University on Wednesday night.

Tale of the Tape

  • The win gives Keene State their 14th regular season LEC Championship and the top seed in the LEC tournament.  The Owls will host a quarterfinal game on October 29 at 4 p.m. and will have homefield advantage throughout the conference championship.  
  • The Owls have also won LEC regular season titles in 1998-99, 2003-09, 2011, and 2013-16.  
  • Worcester State, which had a seven game winning streak snapped, needs to beat Westfield State on Friday to be sure of the No. 2 seed in the LEC tournament.
  • Keene State outshot the Lancers 17-8, while the teams each had six penalty corners. 
  • Gwen Thayer picked up her 15th win of the year, making four saves.

First Half Highlights

  • The Owls' first goal was scored on a penalty corner, when Kendal Brown sent the ball in front of the goal for Sami Smith tip the ball to teammate Brittney Cardente who then sunk the ball in the net for the 1-0 lead.
  • Just 17 seconds later, the Owls flew down the field and scored on a breakaway. Mia Brickley dished the ball to Jensyn Dandeneau for the 2-0 extension.
  • The Owls outshot the Lancers 10-3 in the first half of the game.


Second Half Highlights

  • The Owls kept the action to a minimum in the second half, outshooting the Lancers 7-5.
  • Cardente shot wide in 47th minute, and Erica Stauffer did the same a minute later, but the Owls could not find a third goal.
  • Kayla Renaud and Nicole Tobin forced saves out of Kathryn Salemme later on in the half, and Renaud again required Salemme to make a save with 25 seconds left on the clock.
