KSC Volleyball Drops Tri-Match To WPI, Framingham State

FRAMINGHAM, Mass.--The Keene State College volleyball team fell in a tri-match against both Worcester Polytechnic Institute 3-0 (24-26, 19-25, 23-25) and Framingham State University 3-0 (11-25, 15-25, 22-25) on Saturday at the FSU Athletic Center.

Tale of the Tape - WPI

  • Rachel Lamica led the way with 11 kills for the Keene State offense, while Hannah Szymanski had six and Olivia Mathieu had five.  
  • Katie Cunningham had 25 assists, her 14th match this season with at least that many, and added three digs and a service ace.  Riley Bunker had a team high 15 digs, with Leslie Hearns adding eight and Taylor Bright having seven.
  • The Engineers got a strong game from Maddy Werth, who hit .423 with 13 kills.  Cassandra Tomerlin added 16 digs.

Set One Highlights - WPI

  • Leslie Hearns served the Owls into a 5-0 lead, with a pair of service aces in the opening stretch.   The lead ballooned to 9-3 on a kill by Lamica and an attacking error by Werth.
  • Taylor Bright's ace increased the lead to 16-9, but WPI rattled off seven straight points to tie the match before KSC went back in front on a kill by Brooke Hatanaka.
  • The teams continued to trade points, before KSC reached set point on a kill by Courtney Collins, but WPI forced extra points on a kill by Abbie Gilbert, and netted the next two, including a set ending block by Sandra Duarte, to take the set.

Set Two Highlights - WPI

  • It was WPI's turn to start fast, as the Engineers took an early 4-0 lead, but Lamica had three kills and Szymanski another to tie the set for KSC.
  • A kill from Olivia Mathieu tied the set at 8-8, only to see the Engineers scored the next seven points, taking a 15-8 lead they would never relinquish.
  • Another kill from Mathieu got KSC within 23-18, as WPI ended the set with a kill by Werth.

Set Three Highlights - WPI

  • There was no fast start for either team in the third set, with the teams going back and forth; neither side led by more than two the entire set.  The Owls trailed 8-7 after Kait West's kill, but rallied for a 12-11 lead on Cunningham's service ace.
  • Kills from Szymanski and Mathieu gave KSC a 17-15 advantage, but the Engineers scored five of the next six points for a 20-18 lead.  Riley Bunker served KSC back into the lead, with an ace that made it 22-21.
  • After Durate responded with an ace of her own, Lamica tied the set one final time at 23 before WPI closed out the set with the next two points. 

Tale of the Tape - Framingham State

  • Courtney Collins paced the Owls with eight kills, hitting .294 for the match.  Rachel Lamica added six kills for the Owls, who struggled against the Rams, hitting -.049 while the Rams had 19 total blocks.
  • Riley Bunker had 12 digs and Leslie Hearns had 10. and Katie Cunningham had 15 assists.  Collins had three block assists, with Niamh Dodd, Cunningham, and Kat Carrel each having two.
  • The Rams got 14 kills from Alycia Rackliffe, who also had five digs and six total blocks.

Set One Highlights - Framingham State

  • Framingham State took a 7-2 lead, as Rackliffe had two kills and a block.  The Owl front line hauled Keene State within four, with Hannah Szymanski, Kat Carrel, Courtney Collins, and Olivia Mathieu combining for blocks on three straight plays to cut the lead to 11-7.
  • Another kill from Rackliffe put the Rams up 18-9, and FSU ended the set out scoring KSC 7-2.

Set Two Highlights - Framingham State

  • The second set went saw the Rams take an early 5-3 lead on a kill by Julia Wan, and the lead stayed at two as Mackenzie Whalen and Casie Thurber combined for a block that made it 8-6.
  • Five straight points for Framingham State gave the Rams a 15-8 lead, but the Owls pulled within three, as Kelly Hunt and Collins had kills for a 17-14 deficit.
  • Framingham State shut the door, scoring eight of the final nine points to take the set.


Set Three Highlights - Framingham State

  • The Rams again jumped out to a big lead, going up 5-1 on a KSC error and extending the lead to 9-3 on Rackliffe's service ace.
  • Two kills from Collins and another from Carrel got the Owls withn 10-8, and a kill from Hearns cut the gap to 13-11 and forced the Rams into a timeout.
  • Keene State kept the momentum going out of the timeout, going up 17-14 as Lamica had three kills and Bunker a service ace.  Another kill from Carrel gave KSC a 19-17 lead.
  • Seven straight points from Framingham State sent the game to match point at 24-19, but Hannah Szymanski pulled KSC back, with a kill and two consecutive aces to get the Owls within two before Wan ended the set with a kill.
