Owls Bounced From LEC Tourney By Eastern Conn. State

WILLIMANTIC, Conn.--Riley Bunker recorded her 1000th career dig as the No. 5 seed Keene State College volleyball team was eliminated from the Little East Conference volleyball championship with a 3-0 (22-25, 17-25, 26-28) loss to No. 4 seed Eastern Connecticut State University on Tuesday night at Geissler Gym.

Tale of the Tape

  • Bunker, who needed 11 digs to reach 1,000, finished with 21, along with two service aces.  She finishes the year with 598 digs, the third highest single season total in school history, while her 1,010 digs are just outside the top 10 in school history.
  • Rachel Lamica had a team best 11 kills, with nine digs, while Katie Cunningham, Taylor Bright, and Leslie Hearns all finished with eight digs.
  • Adrianna Mihalek topped the Warriors with 20 kills, 19 digs, and three service aces.


Set One Highlights

  • The Owls took a 6-2 lead as Lamica had three kills and Leslie Hearns had a service ace in the early going.  Two straight kills from Courtney Collins gave KSC an 11-9 lead.
  • Bunker's gave made it 14-12, but the Warriors went on a 7-3 run, taking a 19-17 lead on a kill by Kay Mullen.
  • Lamica tied the set at 20 with a kill, forcing the Warriors into a timeout, but ECSU got a kill from Mihalek and an ace from Jacie Orlowski for a two point lead.
  • Orlowski had another ace following a KSC timeout, but served up an error, and an ECSU error cut the lead to one before the Warriors got the final two points to claim the set.


Set Two Highlights

 

  • The teams traded the first 10 points of the set before the Warriors took a 10-7 lead on a KSC error.
  • A Mihalek kill increased the lead to 14-10, but four straight points for KSC, all on Warrior errors, tied the set at 14.  
  • The Warriors closed out the set on an 8-3 run, including scoring six of the final seven points.

 

Set Three Highlights

 

  • A kill by Lamica gave the Owls an early 7-3 lead, and Taylor Bright served up an ace for a 12-7 advantage, forcing the Warriors to call timeout.
  • Brooke Hatanaka had a kill right out of the timeout, and Hannah Szymanski's kill made it 18-12.  The Warriors scored four straight points to get within two, part of a 10-2 run that on a KSC error to lead 22-20.
  • A Warriors' error and a kill from Lamica tied to set at 23, and the Owls would stave off three straight match points, sending the set to extra points on a kill by Lamica.
  • A kill from Mullen sent the set to match point again, but KSC tied it up on a spike by Kat Carrel.  Carly Balskus sent the set back to match point with a kill, and Mullen's ace put the Warriors into the next round.
