Men's Lacrosse Rolls Past Western New England In 2016 Opener

KEENE, N.H.--Bryan Rotatori had five goals and four assists to lead to the Keene State College men's lacrosse team to a 19-11 win over Western New England University on Tuesday at Owl Athletic Complex.

The Series

  • This was the fourth meeting between the two schools, now tied at 2-2.

 

Tale of the Tape

  • In addition to Rotatori's big game, the Owls got four goals apiece from Tyler McKelvie and Hunter Arnold, and two goals each from Frank Bacarella, Tyler Reilly, and Rob Hart
  • Sophomore Mat Howe, making his first career start, had 13 saves to earn the win.  Steven Kerr made nine stops for the Golden Bears.
  • Jon Bota led Western New England with four goals and an assist, while Keegan Dudeck and Taylor Dubose each had a pair. 

First Half Highlights

 

  • McKelvie put the Owls up early with a goal at the 13:25 mark of the first quarter, and after WNE's Patrick Dillon equalized, Rotatori took a quick pass from Arnold to beat Kerr for a 2-1 lead at the end of the first quarter.
  • Dubose leveled the game at with less then four minutes played of the second quarter, but KSC rattled off the next four goals, three from Rotatori, to take a 6-2 lead.  
  • Bota scored with 3:21 left to cut the gap to 6-3 at halftime.

 

Second Half Highlights

 

  • Keene State outscored the Golden Bears 5-2 over the first 10 minutes of the third period, with Arnold netting three in that span to push the lead to 11-5 with 5:23 left in the frame.
  • Western New England would not go quietly, as Bota scored one and set up another, while Dudeck and Justin Bard also scored as the Golden Bears trimmed the lead to 11-9.  
  • Reilly scored his first of the year with seven seconds left in the third quarter to give the Owls a 12-9 lead after three.
  • Keene State turned on the juice in the fourth quarter, netting the first seven goals of the period to break the game open.  McKelvie and Hart both scored on the man advantage, before Bacarella, McKelvie, Reilly, and Hart scored again for an 18-9 lead. 
  • Mike Wood and Bota scored to briefly give the Golden Bears life with 3:31 left, but McKelvie's fourth of the game with 1:05 to put the game out of reach.

  • Keene State hosts RPI on Saturday at 1 p.m.
  • Western New England travels to Stevenson (Md.) on March 5 for a 7 p.m. start.
