Men's Lacrosse Drops Heartbreaker To No. 6 Bates

LEWISTON, Maine--Bates College scored the winning goal with 17 seconds remaining as the No. 6 Bobcats escaped with a 14-13 win over visiting Keene State College at Garcelon Field on Wednesday evening.

Tale of the Tape

  • In the rematch of last year's first round NCAA game, Tyler McKelvie and Rob Hart each scored four goals and passed out one assist.  Tyler Reilly had three goals, while John Debenedet and Bryan Rotatori each had one.
  • Mathew Howe made 20 saves in net for KSC, who was outshot 61-32 in the contest.
  • Charlie Fay and Jack Allard both had four goals for the Bobcats.  Clarke Jones added three goals and an assist.


First Half Highlights

  • Keene State scored three of the first four goals early in the first quarter.  Hart opened the scoring with an unassisted tally, and after Allard tied the score with 11:49 remaining, Hart and Reilly scored less than two minutes apart for a 3-1 lead.
  • Bates netted the final three goals of the period, as Allard, Fay, and Jones all scored to give the Bobcats a 4-3 lead at the end of the first quarter.
  • Jones increased the lead to 5-3 with the first goal of the quarter, but back-to-back goals from McKelvie tied the game with 13:21 left.  Fay and Hart swapped goals before McKelvie and Reilly scored to give Keene State an 8-7 edge at halftime.


Second Half Highlights

  • Debenedet scored unassisted with 83 seconds gone in the third quarter.  The Bobcats responded with the next four, including two from Fay and one each from Jones and Max Breschi that made it 11-9.
  • The Owls opened the fourth quarter with three straight goals, as Hunter Arnold set up McKelvie, followed by an unassisted goal from Reilly and another marker from Hart with 4:49 left.
  • Bates took the lead back as Breschi and Kyle Weber found the net 33 seconds apart with 4:09 to play.  Rotatori knotted the game back up at 13 off a pass from Hart, but Allard scored what proved to be the game winner from a tight angle with 17 seconds left.
  • Keene State played the final 11 seconds with a man-advantage as Ken O'Friel was penalized for delay of game, but the Owls could not force overtime.
