Triple Crown: Men's Lacrosse Rocks Eastern Connecticut State To Return To NCAAs

KEENE, N.H.--Junior Tyler Reilly scored seven goals as the Keene State College men's lacrosse team breezed to a 22-8 win over Eastern Connecticut State in the championship game of the LEC tournament.  The Owls led 5-0 at the end of the first quarter and never trailed en route to their third consecutive LEC title.

  • Keene State finds out their opponent in the opening round of the NCAA tournament when selections are announced on Sunday night.  Keene State is making their seventh appearance overall in the NCAA tournament.  Reilly was named the Tournament's Most Outstanding Player.

Tale of the Tape

  • In addition to Reilly's seven goals, Keene State got four from Tyler McKelvie, and three each from Rob Hart and Hunter Arnold.  James Dowd added two more goals, as did Bryan Rotatori.  Reilly and Paul Beling both passed out two assists.
  • Mathew Howe played the first three quarters and made nine saves.  Alex Sharp came on for the final period and made five stops.  
  • The Warriors, who were seeking their first LEC championship since 2013, got two goals apiece from Liam Murphy and Tim Reilly.  
  • Blake Smaldone, who made 25 saves when the two teams met on the final day of the regular season, finished with 21 stops for the Warriors.


First Half Highlights

  • McKelvie and Reilly scored twice as the Owls blanked ECSU in the first quarter.  McKelvie scored the first two, three minutes apart, followed by an unassisted tally from Arnold.   Reilly got the final two of the frame, first off a Beling pass with a man-advantage, the second with 46 seconds left.
  • The Warriors finally got on the board in the second quarter, getting the first two of the period from Tim Reilly and Shawn Tierney, but KSC restored a five goal lead through Hart and Rotatori.
  • Eastern Connecticut got within five (10-5) with Liam Murphy's unassisted goal, but James Dowd won the next faceoff and raced down field for an 11-5 lead at halftime.


Second Half Highlights

  • Dowd began the second half as he ended the first; winning a faceoff and streaking downfield for a goal.  Arnold added another with 13:30 to go, and KSC outscored the Warriors 5-2 in the quarter after that for an 18-7 lead.  Reilly and McKelvie added two more each in the period
  • The Owls continued to pour it on in the second half, starting with an unassisted goal from Hart to open the fourth quarter.  Reilly got his seventh off a feed from Charles Molloy IV, and Mitch Hale closed out the game with an unassisted, man-up goal with 31 seconds left.
