Volleyball Ends Granite State Challenge With Wins Over Colby-Sawyer, Daniel Webster

NEW LONDON, N.H.--A change of venue was just the ticket for the Keene State College volleyball team, which posted a 3-0 win over Colby-Sawyer College (25-18, 25-23, 25-12), and a 3-0 win over Daniel Webster College (25-16, 25-15, 25-21) on the final day of the Granite State Challenge on Saturday afternoon.

Tale of the Tape - Colby-Sawyer

 

  • After dropping two matches on the first day in Nashua, the move to New London gave the Owls' offensea boost.  KSC got big games from Rachel Lamica and Courtney Collins; who combined for 20 kills.  Lamica had 14 kills with a pair of service aces while hitting .333, while Collins had six kills against no errors, hitting .353.
  • Katie Cunningham ran the Owl offense to the tune of 29 assists, with 12 digs, while Taylor Bright also had 12 digs and Riley Bunker had 10 and Leslie Hearns nine.
  • Keene State hit .264 for the match, their best percentage of the season, and held the Chargers to .041 hitting.

 

Set One Highlights - Colby-Sawyer

  • The Owls raced out to a 12-2 lead and never relinquished it, as a pair of kills from Lamica on either side of a kill from Cunningham put the Owls well ahead.
  • A service ace by Colby-Sawyer's Olivia Goodrich trimmed the lead to 17-11, but KSC went back in front by seven on a CSC error that made it 22-15.
  • Colby-Sawyer then ended the set on Monika Scheindel's serving error.

Set Two Highlights - Colby-Sawyer

  • The Owls tied the match at six in the early going as Collins and Olivia Mathieu combined for a block on Rebecca Straubel.
  • Three straight points for the Chargers gave them a 9-6 lead, but the Owls went on an 8-2 run as Collins had two kills and Lamica another for a 14-11 KSC advantage.
  • Another spike from Collins gave KSC an 18-14 lead, but Colby-Sawyer would not go quietly, tying the match at 22 on Gabrielle Rodriguez' kill.  Keene State ended the set on a kill from Mathieu.

Set Three Highlights - Colby-Sawyer

  • The third set played out much like the first; Keene State took a large lead and never looked back.  The Owls led 12-4 on a kill from Hannah Syzmanski, and back to back kills from Lamica and Mathieu gave the Owls a 21-11 advantage.
  • The Owls got the final four points to close out the set, taking advantage of three Colby-Sawyer errors before Syzmanski ended the set with a kill.

Tale of the Tape - Daniel Webster

  • Collins and Lamica set the pace again for Keene State - Collins hit .538 with eight kills, two solo blocks, and two block assists, while Lamica added 10 kills while hitting .300 with three service aces, one solo block, and three block assists.  Hannah Syzmanski also had a strong match, adding seven kills against no errors, hitting .700 with two block assists.
  • Cunningham had 21 more assists, while Bunker had 16 digs and a service ace.  
  • KSC limited the Eagles to a hitting percentage of .065, and hit .202 themselves.


Set One Highlights - Daniel Webster

  • Keene State ran out to a 6-1 lead, on the strength of two kills from Lamica and a pair of DWC attacking errors.
  • Daniel Webster responded with 10 straight points, including two service aces by Amanda Gendron to take an 11-6 lead.  The Owls came back to tie the set on 14, then went on an 11-2 run finished by a service ace from Bunker to close out the set.

Set Two Highlights

  • Hannah Syzmanski's ace gave the Owls an 11-4 lead, and though the Eagles got within 12-10 on a KSC error, the Owls went back on top by seven (20-13) on consecutive kills by Lamica.
  • Another kill from Syzmanski and an error by Daniel Webster ended the set.

Set Three Highlights

 

  • Keene State responded from an early 5-1 deficit to take a 10-9 lead on an Eagle service error. 
  • Niamh Dodd's kill edged the Owls up 16-13, and the lead increased to six (22-16) on a kill from Kat Carrel.
  • Daniel Webster made one final push, getting within 24-21 on a kill by Gendron, but Carrel ended the set and the match with another kill.
