How it Happened
It was indeed a physical battle between the Warriors and Owls on Monday evening. In the contest, a total of seven yellow cards were handed out, five to the Owls and two to the Warriors. 36 fouls were called in the game, 21 credited to the Eastern Connecticut and 15 to Keene State. Though physical, that did not stop Keene State from bringing their offensive intensity from the beginning. The Owls were able to take two quick strikes on the Warriors keeper Emily Wallace, but Wallace stood tall as she made her first career start between the pipes for Eastern. Keene State took the first two shots on goal in the contest, followed by the Warriors gaining attack on goalie
Abbie Terrinca, who has played every minute in goal for Keene State this spring. As they have in all four previous games on the season, it was KSC who opened the scoring in the game.
Â
The Owls were awarded a free kick from ten yards outside of the box and senior captain
Maggie Vogt came in to take the kick. Almost a mirror image of her game winning overtime goal against Eastern Connecticut from 2019 from Dr. Ron Butcher Field, Vogt took a strike with her right foot that sailed up and over the outstretched hand of Wallace and into the back of the net, giving Keene State the 1-0 advantage in the first half. The match stayed as a stalemate after the goal from Vogt, with Eastern Connecticut drawing the final shot of the half, but
Abbie Terrinca was able to shut down the Warriors chance keeping Keene State ahead by one to enter the second half. In the half, ECSU outshot Keene 6-5, though Keene State stuck all five of their shots on goal, whereas Eastern came away with two first half shots on goal. Also in the half, Keene State was caught offsides twice and Eastern Connecticut came away with two corner kicks.Â
Â
Physical play in the contest remained, and gradually picked up between the two opponents in the second half. Eastern Connecticut came away with the better half of play in the first 15 minutes of play crediting the first five shots in the half, and two that were on goal and handled by Terrinca. Eastern was able to score their first goal of the game in the 60
th minute when a long ball was sent up and over the heads of the Keene State back line and tracked down by freshman Ashlyn Rogers for Eastern who was able to take a few dribbles and slot the ball into the lower left corner of the net, knotting the game at one all. Rogers grabs her second goal of the season for ECSU, with her first coming over UMass-Dartmouth. Just three minutes later however, it was Keene State who answered with their second of the night.Â
After a foul was committed by Eastern Connecticut, Keene State took seize of an opportunity at goal when
Alexa Skinner sent a ball inside the box that found the head of
Kayleigh Marshall and rolled into the net to give the Owls their lead back. Marshall nets her second goal of the spring for KSC and fifth in her career in the 63
rd minute. As played continued, so did the fouls in the game as well. The Warriors were whistled for 11 second half fouls after both teams were called for eight in the first half. The Owls were caught with six second half fouls and both teams were assessed two yellow cards each. With the Owls up 2-1 with under ten minutes to play in the half, Eastern Connecticut saw their best chance to get back into the game after multiple attempts towards goal.Â
Â
In the 82
nd minute, Eastern Connecticut got three opportunities at goal, all coming with a different end result. Juliette Hogan took the first got inside the box that was blocked by the Keene State defense, followed up by a shot from Eastern's Haley Montesanto that was denied by GK
Abbie Terrinca. The Warriors final attempt of the sequence was cashed into the goal as Alexie Root found a loose ball towards the back post and shot it past a diving Terrinca and defender for Keene State to tie the contest once again. In the 89
th minute, both the Owls and Warriors got clutch saves from their goalkeepers to move the game into overtime for the second straight season between the two teams.Â
Â
To start the overtime period, Keene State would get the best chance right off the get go. The Owls were awarded with a corner kick and looked to end the game in the 92
nd minute. Keene's kick was sent into the box and bounced around and was deflected but Eastern Connecticut was able to send the ball out of the box, interrupting an opportunity at victory for KSC to remain unbeaten on the season. In the 96
th minute of the game, Alexie Root was able to track down a lob ball from her teammate. Root was able to get by one defender and strike with her right foot and tuck the ball into the lower right-hand corner of the net, giving the Warriors the comeback victory 3-2 over the Owls. KSC drops their final game of the spring season, falling to Eastern Connecticut in overtime for just the second time in program history.Â
