How It Happened
One night after a tough loss to 19th-ranked Trinity College (Conn.), KSC was looking for a much-needed victory in the second game of their season-long four game homestand, taking on a program they had outscored 13-1 in their only two previous meetings in Keene and 18-2 overall in four meetings. Early on, it seemed it would be more of the same and KSC would be in good shape, building a 3-0 lead behind goals from
Ellie Hunkins,
Irini Stefanakos, and
Chase Lambert in the opening 9:18 of the contest. However, an improved Colby-Sawyer had other ideas, scoring five of the final six goals to turn the tables entirely and win in the series for the first time as the Owls dropped their fourth in a row.
Julia Lanctot got the Chargers on the board in the 18th minute, and despite falling behind 3-0, the visitors actually had a wide 11-3 edge in penalty corners in the opening half and 19-7 overall in the game. Opponents have drawn 32 more such opportunities than Keene State in the past two games.
Keene State led 3-1 at halftime and still did have a 9-5 edge in shots (7-1 in the opening 15 minutes) despite corner discrepancy, but their lead was gone less than 14 minutes into the second half. Daly scored for the first time in the game in the 32nd minute before Emma Webster tied it at three with 1:18 left in the third. That kicked off a wild flurry of tallies, as KSC went back in front 4-3 with a big goal by Stefanakos in the waning seconds of the quarter – her second of the game and third of the season – but Colby-Sawyer answered quickly when Bella Silva tipped home a drive by Lanctot after a corner just 1:42 into the fourth. The goalkeepers came up big over the remainder of the quarter to send the game into extra time, with the Chargers' Lauren Wilkinson denying Stefanakos twice and Hunkins once in a four minute span. Keene State weathered three CSC corners in the final five minutes, with
Molly Edmark stopping a pair of tries by Courtney Larson to preserve the tie.
The teams traded chances in a wild overtime session. A little over three minutes in, Lambert made a nice self pass to get around Lanctot and dribbled a ball past the feet of an aggressive Wilkinson, but Lanctot got back in the play and cleared the ball away before it got to the back of the cage.
Hannah Wood had a chance a little over a minute later, but her blast from the top of the circle by Wilkinson. There were some frantic moments in the Owls' own end in the ensuing moments, but Edmark came up with a pair of stops. Colby-Sawyer's winner did not come as a result of sustained pressure in the circle, but instead a KSC turnover as they looked to get into the attacking area but could not get past Aleah Murph, who also had a defensive save on the evening. She halted Hunkins' momentum, took the ball, and fed a beautiful pass to Daly who slid it past Edmark for the winner in the 68th minute.
Edmark (0-4) made six saves in the game while her counterpart Wilkinson (3-0) stopped 12 of KSC's 16 tries.
