Box Score

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Keene State women's soccer team traveled to take on Rhode Island College in the rain on Saturday, as the Owls looked to remain undefeated in Little East Conference play in their 2023 regular season. Kendall Healey would score the tying goal with under seven minutes to play for the Owls, which knotted the game at one apiece. Time would expire shortly after, as the teams would draw 1-1 and each gain a point in the standings. With the draw, the Owls finished LEC regular season play going 3-0-5 on the season.

How it Happened

The first half would start off with not too many shots, with only six shots between the two teams, four from Keene State and a pair from Rhode Island College, but none of the six shots would be on goal. Alexa Skinner would get the first shot off, just three minutes into the match, but the shot would go wide of the net. Both of RIC's shots in the first half would come in the 15th and 16th minute as Tayla Salome and Tayshia Cary would both get shots off, for the Anchorwomen, but they would miss the target. Keene State would get three more shots off throughout the first half, but all of them would miss the target. Both teams would head into halftime tied 0-0.

Rhode Island College would come out in the second half, a whole different team at the start. Olivia Williams would get three shots off for the Anchorwomen within the first 12 minutes of the second half; the first going wide, the second being blocked, and the third coming off a corner kick from Karen Johnson-Hoffman, that would sail over the Owls' goalkeeper, Sonia Moritz, and find Williams who was charging to the goal and deflected it in to put RIC up 1-0. A few minutes later, the Owls looked to respond as Elizabeth Kopicko and Skinner would both get shots on net, but the Anchorwomen's goalie, Chloe Angelone, would make a pair of saves to preserve RIC's lead. Right after the Owls' shots, RIC would respond with three of their own over the next six minutes, although only one would be on target and Moritz would make a save. Over the next 10 minutes, the teams would trade possessions back and forth, and they would each get a shot on goal, but Moritz and Angelone would each make a save in net. Then with less than seven minutes left to play in the match, the ball would bounce to Kendall Healey, who was far outside of RIC's box. Healey would fake a shot to get the defender in the air, take one dribble and then send a rocket toward the net, that Angelone was unable to corral, and it would bounce off her and trickle into the net, evening the game up at one apiece with little time remaining. A minute after Healey's goal, RIC looked to pull ahead again, but Moritz would make another save in net to keep the contest tied. Soon after Moritz's save, Skinner would take a free kick in RIC's half of the field and look to cross it to a teammate. After it was deflected back out to her, she would send an arching shot on net, but Angelone would be able to cleanly grab it this time. Neither team would get an opportunity the rest of the way, as both teams would pick up a point in the conference standings with the 1-1 draw.

Moritz made three saves in net, while allowing one goal on the day. Angelone made four saves and allowed one goal.

"[We] need to learn how to win games but [I'm] happy about going undefeated in the conference," explained Sarah Testo, the head coach of the Keene State women's soccer team explained when asked her thought on the team finishing LEC play undefeated in the regular season.

Inside the Box
  • With the draw, Keene State still has the all-time advantage in the series against Rhode Island College, leading 24-2-2. The tie ended the Owls' four game winning streak against RIC, where they had outscored them by a combined score of 16-4.
  • With the tie, Keene State moved to 3-0-5 in LEC regular season play, not losing a single game in the regular season to a LEC opponent. The last time the Owls did this was in 2011 when they went 7-0.
  • The Owls' 14 points in the LEC standings are the most since having 15 points in 2017.
  • With the tie, Moritz moved to 4-1-5 on the season in the 10 games that she has played a full 90 minutes, only allowing 7 goals while making 40 saves in that span.
  • Owls' senior Kendall Healey scored her third goal of the season, and it was an important one as it helped the Owls grab one point in the conference standings.
