Men’s Lacrosse Edged Out by Plymouth State in Overtime

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Junior attacker Crosby Fay scored the game-winning goal in overtime for Plymouth State University, as the Keene State College men's lacrosse team fell to its in-state rival 9-8 Friday at Panther Field. Due to UMass-Boston defeating Castleton University 25-7 on Friday, Keene State will enter the Little East Conference Men's Lacrosse Tournament as the No. 4 seed.

Records
  • Keene State: 8-6, 6-2 LEC
  • Plymouth State: 13-3, 6-2 LEC

How it Happened
Keene State was only able to get one goal in the first quarter, thanks to junior midfielder Colby Quiet. That would not match Plymouth State's three in the quarter, which came from sophomore attacker Ryan Jones, senior attacker Mike Fleury with the Panthers up a man, and Fay. The Owls were only able to put up five shots on goal in the quarter.

The second quarter would prove to be a more successful one for KSC, who scored the first five goals in the frame. Junior attacker Andrew Miller began the scoring run with an unassisted goal at 13:34. Senior attacker Cooper Cioffi then scored the next two, with senior midfielder Nathan Sickles and Miller getting the assists. After that came unassisted goals by sophomore midfielder Jeff Wiedenfeld and freshman midfielder Tim Souza to put Keene State up 6-3 with 5:56 remaining in the half. But Plymouth State fought back with two straight goals to make it 6-5 Owls at halftime.

The third quarter proved to be a difficult one for the Owls, who were shut out in the frame. Meanwhile, the Panthers got three goals from Fay to take an 8-6 lead into the fourth. Keene State returned the favor by shutting out the Panthers in the fourth, while getting goals from Miller and Sickles to tie the game at eight with 4:24 remaining in regulation. After neither team could score, the game went into overtime.

At 2:08 in the extra frame, Fay fired a shot over a defender's shoulder and past junior goalkeeper Charlie Giuliotti for the game-winning goal. With the win, Plymouth State set a program record for wins in a season with 13.

Inside the Crease
  • Keene State has an all-time record of 25-5 against Plymouth State.
  • This is the second game Keene State has played in this season that went into overtime. The other one was on March 5, a 12-11 win at Rivier University for the Owls.
  • Keene State finishes in a three-way tie for second place in the LEC along with Plymouth State and UMass-Boston. Due to having the largest goal differential in games played between the teams involved in the tie at +8, UMass-Boston gets the No. 2 seed and a bye into the semifinals. Plymouth State gets the No. 3 seed due to defeating Keene State in the only game between the two teams this season.
