Maccarini Leads Men’s Lacrosse to LEC Semifinals

KEENE, N.H. – Sophomore attacker Rex Maccarini scored a career-high seven goals as the No. 4 seed Keene State College men's lacrosse team defeated No. 5 Massachusetts Maritime Academy 22-12 Tuesday in the Quarterfinals of the Little East Conference Men's Lacrosse Tournament at the Owl Athletic Complex.

In its first home game in more than two weeks, Keene State grabbed an early lead and never looked back. The Owls scored the first seven goals in the first quarter, three of which came from Maccarini. Senior attacker Cooper Cioffi, who finished the game with five goals, scored two during this run. The other two goals came from junior midfielder Colby Quiet and freshman midfielder Sebastian Foresi.
 
The Buccaneers of Massachusetts Maritime Academy finished the first quarter with three straight goals to make it a 7-3 game heading into the second. Keene State would add another seven goals in the quarter while only allowing two. Cioffi scored his other three goals, Maccarini added two more and both junior attacker Andrew Miller and freshman midfielder Tim Souza each scored their first goal of the game. The Owls went into halftime up 14-5.
 
After Massachusetts Maritime opened the third quarter with two straight goals, Quiet ended the Buccaneers' streak with his second goal of the game at 9:00. The Owls and Buccaneers traded goals throughout the remainder of the frame. Maccarini picked up his final two goals of the game, while Massachusetts Maritime scored twice. KSC entered the fourth quarter up 17-9.
 
Freshman midfielder and Keene native Jaheim Lancaster, who had an assist back in the first quarter, opened the scoring in the fourth for the Owls. Senior midfielder Manning Kirker then scored his first goal of the season, after Massachusetts Maritime scored its first goal of the frame. To close out the game, sophomore attacker Connor Woods picked up a hat trick in the quarter by scoring the final three goals of the game for KSC.
 
Inside the Crease
  • This is the first time Keene State has scored at least 20 goals in a game since April 4 of this season, when the Owls defeated Massachusetts Maritime 21-8. KSC's 22 goals are also the most the team has scored in 2023.
  • Only one other Keene State player scored seven goals in a game in 2023. That would be Cioffi, who did it against Massachusetts Maritime back in April.
  • Maccarini's previous career high in goals was six, which he scored earlier this season against the University of Southern Maine on April 8. The Owls won the game 19-10.
  • Junior goalkeeper Charlie Giuliotti made 13 saves for the Owls.

Keene State travels to Danbury, Conn., to take on No. 1 Western Connecticut State University on Thursday, May 4 at 7 p.m. WestConn defeated Keene State 18-17 on April 25 en route to winning the LEC regular season championship.
