WESTFIELD, Mass. – First year
Madison Mousley (East Thetford, Vt.) shot an 85 to become the first medalist in Keene State College women's golf history as the Owls won the Westfield State Invitational by 24 strokes on Sunday at the Shaker Farms Country Club.
Mousley won the event by nine shots over Nichols College's Maya Orbegozo, who shot a 94. Westfield State's Katie Egan shot a 99 to finish in third.
As a team, the Owls won the event by a wide margin, easily outdistancing Nichols, who shot a 425 as a team while Westfield finished with a 447.
Included in KSC's contingent was a 104 for
Jodi Mercier, while
Jasmine Shtufaj and
Bianca Bostwick each finished with a 106.
"The women played really well today. It was a fun day," said Keene State head coach Jeff Timmer. "Our goal this year is to have four scores under 100 in the same tournament and we were close today. The team is working hard and will continue to get better."
Mousley was plus-one (36) on the back nine and finished her round with a birdie on the 18th, a Par 4, 308-yard hole.
"Madi had a back nine of one over par – it was fun to watch," added Timmer. "And the other girls on the team were cheering her on at 18 when she made the birdie."
Keene State improved by 37 shots as a team from their season-opening round a week ago when they shot a 438 at the KSC Invitational on their home course. Mousley shot a 95 that day in her collegiate debut.
In their inaugural season a year ago, KSC shot a 437 at Shaker Farms in the spring when they finished 13 strokes better than Westfield State. The Owls' first-ever match as a varsity program came in Westfield at the Tekoa Country Club on September 24 last season when each team shot a 474.
Keene State returns to action next Sunday, September 24 when they host Suffolk University at the Keene Country Club.
