KEENE, N.H. – Backed by a strong and experienced defense, Worcester Polytechnic Institute used that and a goal in every quarter to beat the Keene State College field hockey team 4-0 in a non-conference game at the Owl Athletic Complex Wednesday night.
Postgame Interview (Amy Watson)
The Owls (14-5) were limited to just nine shots, seven on target, and two penalty corners as they fell to 5-5 in their last 10 games since a program-best 9-0 start. They have been held to two goals or less in four of their last five games overall.
WPI (10-6) did not waste any time getting on the board, as Arie Lang opened the scoring just 3:33 in and that would prove to be all the Engineers would need to notch their fourth straight win and improve to 6-3 on the road. They have allowed a goal or less in 10 of their 16 games, helped by a defensive core that has one senior and three graduate students.
KSC had chances in the circle, but was routinely stifled before they could get any shots off toward WPI goalkeepers Ella Moreau (45:00) or Myles Lakin (15:00).
The Engineers doubled their lead just 48 seconds into the second quarter when Lauren Meinhold set up Eliza Dutson, and then made it 3-0 a little over five minutes after halftime when Abbey Powers found the back of the cage.
