Late Handball Helps Give Owls Penalty Shot Goal as KSC Draws UMD, 1-1

KEENE, N.H. – The Keene State College men's soccer team returned home at Dr. Ron Butcher Field on Saturday afternoon as they hosted Little East Conference opponent, University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth, as the Owls looked to make it three consecutive LEC wins in a row. After the Owls allowed a goal in the 29th minute, Alex Nicolas evened it up at one apiece for KSC in the 63rd minute and the two teams ended the contest in a 1-1 draw, as neither team scored the rest of the contest.

  • Keene State: 3-5-2 (2-1-1 LEC)
  • UMass-Dartmouth: 1-6-3 (0-1-2 LEC)
Postgame Interview (Coach Schmidt)

How it Happened
Both teams traded shots back and forth to open the contest, as Owls' goalkeeper, Regan Racicot, saved the first shot on goal from the Corsairs 10:10 into play. On the other end of the field nearly three minutes later, it would not be the Corsairs' goalkeeper, Ethan Donahue, that would save KSC's first shot on goal, but Nick Mahjoory wound up saving a shot that got past Donahue, to keep the Owls off the board early. UMD struck first in the 29th minute after a Corsair throw in was misplayed in the KSC defensive half, Joey Paiva sent a shot over the head of Racicot to give the Corsairs the lead early on. Neither team had another scoring opportunity the remainder of the half, although Giacomo Sinopoli received a red card for the Owls with just under 10 minutes remaining in the half, which limited KSC to playing with just 10 players the rest of the 55 minutes of play.

The second half started slower as neither team had a real scoring opportunity, until after a corner kick for KSC was sent into the Corsair box, the Owls were awarded a penalty kick thanks to the ball finding the hand of Thomas Meader. Alex Nicolas, who scored the game-winning goal in the Owls' 1-0 win over Eastern Connecticut State University (9/28/24), was chosen to take the penalty for the Owls, and he buried his shot into the top right corner of the goal to tie the game up at one apiece. Over the next 15 minutes, UMD tried to pull ahead again, as they applied pressure on the KSC defense, but with a save coming from Racicot and a defensive save from Ali Alzawar, KSC held off the Corsairs' push. The Owls' final attempt, in the last few minutes came from Nicolas, but Donahue wound up making his first save of the game to deny KSC the late goal. The Owls' defense returned the favor in the final minutes by blocking a pair of shots from UMD, as both teams drew 1-1, once the 90 minutes of play were up.

Inside the Box
  • With the tie, KSC still leads the all-time series, 20-8-4 over the Corsairs. KSC has gone 5-0-2 over the last seven contests and outscored UMD 10-4.
  • UMD outshot the Owls, 17-12 in the contest, including 4-3 in shots on goal and an 8-3 corner kick advantage.
  • Coming in as a reserve, Nicolas played 48 minutes and scored his second goal in three games for the Owls.
  • Although the Owls did record no yellow cards for the second time this season, the red card from Sinopoli forced KSC to play down a man for the remainder of the 55 minutes of play.
