How it Happened
KSC opened the game with a power play opportunity 1:32 into play, but it did not last too long, as the Owls only had one shot on goal before with 34 seconds remaining, KSC recorded a penalty of their own by having too many Owls on the ice. On 4-on-4, Rivier took one shot on goal that
Madelyn Adamic saved for the Owls, while when Rivier was on the power play, they did not record a shot on goal. When Rivier had the extra skater, KSC was the only team to record a shot on goal. As the Owls' penalty was killed off, the Raiders turned it over in the offensive zone, which led to
Brianna Finke and
Molly Price on a 2-on-0 the other way, but the duo was unable to connect, and the game remained scoreless five minutes into the contest. The next chance for KSC came on a power play at the 7:23 mark, but the Owls were unable to convert, as Rachel Symmes, the Raiders' goaltender, made four saves in net, and the Raiders' defense blocked a pair of shots from KSC. After each goaltender made a pair of saves, 4:43 after the last penalty was killed by the Raiders, they were called for their third of the game. KSC converted quickly on it, as soon after, Iantosca and
Ellie Patrick picked up assists by setting
Paige Henault up with a goal to put KSC ahead 1-0 with 5:31 remaining in the first. Rivier had a power play opportunity of their own later in the first period, but their one shot on goal during it did not find the back of the net, as the Owls took a 1-0 lead into the second period of play.
Each goalie made a save on the opposition's first shot on goal in the second period, but at the 5:46 mark,
Camden Ladzinski took a shot from the goal line, that deflected off Symmes and into the back of the net to put the Owls up 2-0. Soon after, the Raiders went on the attack as they tried to cut the Owls lead in half. Adamic saved their next two shots on goal, but then just 18 seconds into a power play opportunity, the Raiders finally found the back of the net. Following a save on Rebecca McKelvey, the rebound found Tia Picardi, who put the rebound past Adamic, giving Rivier the power play goal and cutting the Owls' lead in half. Over the next 3:30 of play, Adamic made four more saves, while the Owl defense blocked a pair of shots, coming from
Rory Owens and
Olivia Pollard, before at the 11:56 mark, the Owls had another power play opportunity. KSC was unable to convert on their power play as they had just two shots on goal, which were saved by Symmes. After Rivier killed off their penalty, they dominated the rest of the period, as they outshot KSC 10-4 on shots on goal. Symmes saved all shots from KSC, while Adamic was unable to save all 10 from the Raiders. At the 15:32 mark in the second, Rivier tied the game up at two apiece, as Grace Arsenault netted the goal for Rivier. Then, following four saves in a row by Adamic, a failed clear by the Owls fell right to Jessica Driscoll, who buried the shot into the back of the net to put Rivier up 3-2 heading into the final 20 minutes of play.
Once again, KSC was on the power play early on in the period, as Haylie Grossman was called for interference, 3:02 into the third. The Owls were unable to capitalize on the opportunity as Symmes made a pair of saves and the Raiders' defense blocked four shots from the Owls. Symmes made a pair of saves again shortly after, but following a faceoff win by
Emily Underhill, her and Ladzinski both picked up an assist as Price scored the tying goal, to even the game up at three apiece with 14:31 left to play in regulation. After entering the net to start the third period, Owls' goaltender, Abby Tanner, made her first two saves in goal for the Owls at the seven-minute mark. The Owls continued to pester Symmes on the other side of the ice, and they were finally able to break through again at the 14:01 mark in the period. After Rivier was called for yet another penalty at the 13:40 mark, just 21 second later,
Haylee Owen passed the puck over to Patrick at the blue line for a one-timer. Patrick's shot was perfectly deflected in front of the goal by Iantosca, past Symmes, and into the back of the net to give KSC a 4-3 advantage with 5:59 remaining in play. Over the next minute, Rivier kept trying to tie the contest back up, but Tanner made three saves before there were offsetting penalties called and play moved to 4-on-4. KSC only got one shot on goal over the 4-on-4, as it was cut short with KSC being called for another penalty with 18 seconds remaining and the game went to 4-on-3 for the Raiders. After both teams killed off the original penalties, Rivier and KSC called back-to-back timeouts with 17:45 remaining and 1:39 remaining on the Owls penalty kill. Rivier won the ensuing faceoff in the Owls' defensive zone and the Raiders pulled Symmes for the extra attacker as play went to 6-on-4 for Rivier. Tanner held strong in net by making three crucial saves, with Patrick and Owen playing solid defense by each blocking a shot, to kill off the rest of the penalty, leaving 34 second left of 6-on-5 play for the Raiders. The final 34 seconds, the Owls held off the Raiders' last push, as three more Owls' each blocked a shot, with
Maddie DeSouza, Henault, and Emma NcNeil helping seal the deal for the Owls for their fourth win in a row.
