WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Playing their fifth game in nine days, the Keene State College women's ice hockey team traveled to take on Williams College on Saturday afternoon. The Ephs got the best of the Owls in the contest, as they ended KSC's four-game winning streak, by a final of 9-0.

  • Williams: 2-2
How it Happened

The Ephs came out of the gates hot, with a pair of shots on goal in the opening minute, but Owls' netminder, Abby Tanner, made saves on the shots, before KSC was called for a penalty, 1:02 into play. Tanner continued to hold strong by making three more saves over the next 1:04 of play, where Williams was called for too many players on the ice. Neither team scored on the 4-on-4 and the recorded one shot on goal in the extra-skater opportunity, with Brianna Finke being denied a goal by the Ephs' goaltender, Amanda Lackmann. On the other side of the ice, Tanner made three more saves in a row, until at the 5:29 mark the Ephs finally broke through with a goal being scored by Isa Healey. Williams looked to add another goal with a penalty on the Owls at the 9:31 mark, but KSC killed the penalty off with Tanner making four saves and three blocked shots from the Owls' defense, coming from Grace Bazin, Emma McNeil, and Maddie DeSouza. Tanner made four more saves prior to KSC's next penalty, which came with 4:53 left in the period. Tanner saved the first five shots of the power play for the Ephs, but the sixth on target went past her from Lucie Bond to put Williams up 2-0 with 3:35 remaining in the period. Exactly two minutes later, Jaelyn Keiver added another goal for the Ephs to go up 3-0 heading into the second period.

Tanner continued to make saves in the start of the second period, as she made six more, before the Owls received their first penalty of the second period, at the 3:34 mark. KSC easily killed it off with just two shots on goal as play returned back to even strength and the Owls tried to cut into the Ephs lead on the other end of the ice. Lackmann saved two KSC shots, coming against DeSouza and Emily Underhill as the Ephs held their 3-0 lead at the 6:27 mark in the second. 59 seconds later, the Ephs added another goal as they scored on their first shot of a power play opportunity for Keiver's second goal of the day. KSC recorded four shots on goal over the next four minutes, including a pair over a power play opportunity, but Lackmann denied the Owls. Later in the period, Tanner made nine saves in a row, with the first two coming on a power play for the Ephs, but she was unable to save the third, as Claire Murphy scored a power play goal at the 17:23 mark in the second. The Ephs tacked on another goal 42 seconds later as Merrill Delich scored goal number six for the Ephs, as they took a 6-0 lead into the final 20 minutes of play.

Makenna Montgomery entered as the Owls' goaltender to start the final period. After she saved the Ephs' first three shots, they got the fourth past her at the 4:20 mark, as Chloe Nixon scored on a rebound for Williams. Maddie Zack tallied the Ephs' eighth goal of the game, 8:44 into the period, following a pair of saves by Montgomery. The Ephs' ninth and final goal came on a power play with 9:29 remaining as Bond scored her second of the game for Williams. KSC held Williams off the board the remainder of the contest with Montgomery making 12 more saves in goal for the Owls with KSC killing off one penalty by only allowing a pair of shots on goal.

"I knew we were going to be in for our greatest challenge of the season. My greatest concern was our team's ability to compete to its fullest potential, finishing late in a hard fought emotional game on Friday with a quick turn-around to prepare for out fifth game in nine days was going to be a huge task" said head coach Rob Morgan.

"Williams is a talented team with depth. They had a great transition game against us and their power play was definitely clicking. It was good for our team to face a program with a championship pedigree. I am pleased with where our team's development is at, while we got thumped today, we also continued to learn and see positive growth."
