Postgame Interview (Coach Morgan)
How it Happened
The first period was all Bowdoin, as the Polar Bears outshot the Owls 17-1 in the opening 20 minutes of play. Meghan Britt got the Polar Bears on the board 1:18 into the game, after KSC goaltender
Ai Chung made the initial save on the shot from Luna Lu, Britt put the rebound into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead for the Polar Bears. KSC got their first penalty of the game shortly after the opening goal but were able to kill it off with only two shots on goal, which Chung saved. Bowdoin added their other two goals in the opening period at the 7:20 mark, which was scored by Ava Pronevzo and at the 11:13 mark, as Ava Imposimato gave Bowdoin a 3-0 lead. Chung made seven saves the rest of the period as the Polar Bears took their 3-0 lead into the second.
Abby Tanner entered the net for the Owls at the start of the second period, and she made three saves in the first 3:24 of play to limit the Polar Bears' lead for the moment. KSC had their first power play opportunity 4:26 into the contest, but Bowdoin's goaltender, Sarah Peterson, saved both of KSC's shots on goal, coming from
Paige Henault and
Ellie Patrick. After Peterson made a third save shortly following her two on the Owls' power play opportunity, Bowdoin scored a pair of goals in a minute, as Bella Schifano blocked a shot out of the air with her stick on defense and coasted to the other side of the rink to put Bowdoin up 4-0 with a goal. The second of the pair came 55 seconds later, as Bella Mele scored for the Polar Bears at the 8:19 mark in the second. Less than four minutes later, Bowdoin added their sixth of the game, a power play goal, coming from Jane McCarter. Head Coach
Rob Morgan decided to have
Madelyn Adamic enter the net for the Owls following the goal and Adamic saved the first four shots she saw in 5-on-5. Soon after, KSC was called for another penalty, which Adamic saved the first shot during it, but was unable to save the second, as Anyi Sun put Bowdoin up 7-0 heading into the final period.
Henault won the faceoff in the third to make it three opening faceoffs won on the day, and both teams traded a shot on goal which the opposing netminder saved shortly after. After Adamic made three saves in a row on goal, both teams were accessed a penalty, as Gia Massari was called for a cross-checking, while
Molly Price came to her teammate's defense and took Massari down and received a five-minute major penalty and game misconduct for KSC. Adamic made one save on the 4-on-4, before KSC was called for another penalty, this time on
Brianna Finke, who received a double minor for roughing and unsportsmanlike conduct, with just 59 second left on Massari's penalty and 3:59 left on Price's. Nobody scored on the 4-on-3, but once Bowdoin moved to 5-on-3, they had three shots that Adamic saved and then shortly after, netted goal number eight, as McCarter scored her second power play goal of the game to free Finke from the box.
Haylee Owen and
Camden Ladzinski both blocked a shot on defense for KSC, bit in 5-on-4, Massari scored for the Polar Bears, with 12:36 left to play. After Price's penalty was completed, Bowdoin had another power play attempt, but KSC killed it easily. The rest of the contest, Adamic made five saves in goal, compared to two from Peterson, as KSC was able to kill off another penalty and the Polar Bears held onto their 9-0 victory over KSC.
