Owls' Early Lead Slips Away in Final Minutes to Bears, 3-2

Box Score

Rutland, Vt. – After scoring a pair of goals to go up 2-0 less than 10 minutes into the game, the Keene State College women's ice hockey team was unable to find the back of the net again in the contest, as the Potsdam Bears scored three straight goals and the game-winner being a short-handed goal with 36 seconds remaining for the 3-2 win over the Owls at The Bagley Invitational.

Records
  • Keene State: 7-6
  • Potsdam: 4-4-1
How it Happened

The Owls opened the first period peppering the Bears' goaltender Maddy Ferguson in net with five shots in the opening 2:41 of play. The last of the two shots came on a power play opportunity for the Owls, but Ferguson was unable to save the third shot in a row on the power play as Emma McNeil and Ava Iantosca picked up assists on Molly Price's power play goal to put KSC up 1-0, 2:45 into the game. Over the next six minutes, the Bears were on the attack as they recorded six shots on goal, including four across a power play opportunity, but the Owls were able to kill the penalty off with their goaltender Makenna Montgomery making all six saves in net to preserve KSC's lead. 9:26 into the period, after winning the faceoff six seconds prior, Ellie Patrick scored for the Owls for the second straight game, with Grace Bazin and Paige Henault picking up assists to give KSC a 2-0 lead. Over the next five minutes, the Bears continued to try to cut into the Owls lead, but they were unable to score as Montgomery saved all 10 of their shots on goal. Later in the period, both teams received a penalty shortly apart, but they both killed them off and neither team scored the remainder of the first as KSC took their 2-0 lead into the first intermission.

Both goalies made a pair of saves in the opening minutes of the second, but Potsdam had another power play opportunity 5:46 into the period. KSC killed their third consecutive penalty off, with Montgomery only needing to make three saves over the two minutes to keep KSC up by two. Two seconds after the penalty ended, KSC was called for another penalty, that they once again cleared with Montgomery making three saves this time. Just over halfway through the contest the Bears found the back of the net for the first time, as Taylor Swamp scored to cut the Owls' lead in half. KSC tried to increase their lead back to two over the next four minutes, but their three shots were all saved by Ferguson. The second period ended nearly the same as the first as both teams had penalties not too far apart, but no goals came from them with Ferguson making a pair of saves and Montgomery making three over the penalties. KSC was able to hold off a late push from the Bears with Montgomery making a save and a shot from Elise Clifford hit the pipe to keep KSC ahead heading into the final 20 minutes of play.

44 seconds into the third both teams received a penalty, but after neither team recorded a shot on goal over the two minutes, the only thing that came from it was another penalty against the Bears as KSC had a 5-on-4 advantage. Unfortunately for KSC, just as the 4-on-4 went, there were no shots on goal on the extra-skater opportunity for the Owls. Potsdam continued to accumulate penalties in the third as after Karenhatiro Johnson was called for hooking 5:45 into the period, eight seconds later, Josie Purdy received a five-minute major and game misconduct for hitting from behind to give KSC a 5-on-3 advantage. 21 seconds after Purdy's penalty, the Bears were called for another penalty, which added two minutes onto Johnson's penalty and increased the Owls 5-on-3 advantage to 3:32 remaining on it. Despite the advantage, all of KSC's seven shots were saved by Ferguson and all of the penalties were killed off with 9:07 remaining in the game. 12:28 into the period, KSC had yet another power play opportunity, but for the fourth time, they were unable to get a shot on goal with the extra skater. As the clock started to tick down, Potsdam tied the game up at two with 2:21 remaining in regulation as Rylee Garrow's shot went off Montgomery's stick and over her and into the back of the net. With 1:17 remaining in the third, the Bears were called for their tenth penalty of the game and seventh in the third period giving KSC a great opportunity to score late in regulation. Under 45 seconds remained as KSC took the puck into the offensive zone but after the Owls lost possession, the Bears had a 2-on-1 advantage the other way as Rebecca Cain sent a pass over to Jalynn Castro. Just outside the near faceoff zone in the Owls' side, Castro ripped a shot on goal just over the left shoulder of Montgomery and into the top right corner of the net to give Potsdam a 3-2 lead with just 36 seconds remaining. The Bears defense shut down the shocked Owls for the remainder of the period as they came away with the 3-2 victory over KSC.
