PORTLAND, Maine –
Madison Mousley shot a career-best 83 and
Abby Weiterman an 89 as the Keene State College women's golf team finished tied for second at the University of Southern Maine Invitational on Sunday at the Riverside Golf Course.
Mousley, a junior, recorded 10 pars in her round including six on the front nine, where she finished three-over (39), the third-best score of any individual on holes one through nine at the event (three behind Isabel Gonzalez-Villarreal and one behind Tanya Chowdery of Bentley University). Mousley bettered her previous collegiate low rounds of 84 and 85 (twice).
In addition to Mousley, Weiterman finished with an 89, including matching Mousley with a 44 on the back nine. She had six pars, including four on the front nine.
Sadie Murray (95),
Mackenzie Hagearty (97), and
Laura Donahue (105) rounded out KSC's contingent, with Murray carding a birdie on No. 4 and Hagearty finishing with a birdie on the 18th hole.
It was a successful day for the Owls as a team, finishing with a 364, tied for second with Husson University. It was also a 29-stroke improvement from the same event from a season ago, with Donahue improving by 19 strokes. Mousley improved on her score by two shots from last season at the Riverside Golf Course, where she shot an 85 (+13).
Division II Bentley took the team title with a 321, including an impressive one-under score from Gonzalez-Villarreal where she was even on the front nine and one-under on the back, finishing with a 71. Chowdery was just four strokes back with a 75. Those two combined for six birdies and 23 pars.
The Owls finished 20 strokes better than fellow Little East Conference member University of Southern Maine (384).
"We did a good job finishing strong, but we lost a few shots around the green today," said KSC head coach Jeff Timmer. "Another solid day for the women's team."
KSC will host their own invitational next Sunday (September 28) at 9:30 a.m.
