KEENE, N.H. – The Keene State College baseball team again joined good company in the program's history Wednesday when the Little East Conference released their end of season awards, seeing nine Owls be recognized on the all-league teams including four on the first team, the second most in a single-season in program history.
All four of the first team selections were newcomers to the first team this year – conducted through a vote of the league's nine coaches – including seniors
David Floyd (pitcher) and
Evan McCue (third base), and sophomores
Derek Finlay (outfield) and
Trevor Snow (second base).
Floyd was dominant and KSC's clear ace on the mound, pitching to a 1.64 ERA in 38.1 innings on the season after ramping back up from an injury. He struck out 42 and held opponents to a .145 batting average, compiling a 4-0 record over nine starts. A near .300 hitter over the final three years of his career and another member of the senior class that helped turn the program around, McCue was also a first team selection (up from second) at third base. He hit .293 and added seven doubles, two home runs, and a career-high 34 RBI while reaching base at a career-best .393 clip.
Joining the veteran duo are no doubt two pieces that the Owls will turn their eyes to beginning next year in Finlay and Snow, both sophomores who hit well over .300 and drove in over 60 runs. Snow finished his season with a .376 average, second-best on the team, with a .981 OPS over 34 games (29 starts). He added 25 RBI and 12 steals, reaching base at a .445 clip.
Fans may remember he was also featured as having the No. 6 play on ESPN SportsCenter's national daily countdown of the ten best in the country on Saturday. Finlay, in his first full season after working his way back from an injury of his own and transferring from the University of Albany, came up with big play after big play on both sides of the ball – hitting .327 with a .907 OPS over 43 games. He added a .420 OPS and had 16 extra-base hits (11 2B, 2 3B, 3 HR) to his 36 RBI.
In addition to the first teamers,
Evan Cali (C) – with his team-best .385 batting average and 43 RBI (second-most) – and
Lucas Rogers (OF) were both named to the conference's second team, while
Ethan Rainha (OF),
Jonathan Chatfield (1B), and
Evan LeVasseur (RP) were named to the third team.
Those names also represent major pieces for KSC, as Chatfield led the team with seven home runs and 50 RBI while Cali had a hit in 26 of his final 27 games while also stealing 50 times in his career and throwing out 50 possible base-stealers in his career.
Rogers had a strong junior campaign, hitting .355 with a .490 OBP, including a 5-for-9 showing in the Owls' final three games of the LEC tournament. Rainha also hit over .300 (.314) as KSC finished with the third highest single-season team batting average in program history. On the mound, LeVasseur struck out 25 over 32.1 innings, recording a 4.73 ERA in his rookie season.
Keene State finished the season 26-17 and reached the LEC championship round for the second consecutive year for the first time since 2008 and 2009 before suffering a tough loss late Saturday at the University of Southern Maine.
