Owls Move On to Championship of First-Ever LEC Women's Soccer Tournament

KEENE, NH - Suzanne Heinkel's goal 18 minutes into the game was the difference as second seed Keene State College edged third-seed Plymouth State College in a semi-final game of the First Annual Little East Conference Women's Soccer Tournament played Friday in Keene.

The win gives KSC an 11-5-2 record and a chanced to play either Western Connecticut or Eastern Connecticut in the LEC Final on Sunday. Plymouth State, which goes to 12-6-1 on the season, now awaits a possible ECAC Tournament bid, its 17th consecutive post-season berth.

Heinkel was at the right place at the right time to score the game-winner. After Jessica Williams's free kick hit off the cross bar, the freshman forward collected the ball and put it into the open net.

"It came off the cross bar, and all I had to do was tap it in," said Heinkel, who scored her fifth goal of the season.

KSC coach Denise Lyons thought the Owls were lucky to escape with the victory. "I'm excited about the fact that we're going to the finals with such a young team, but it wasn't a good performance. We were lucky to hang on for the win."

After a shaky first half, PSC took it to the Owls in the second half. Senior Faith Wahlen (Hampstead, NH) had a couple of shots that just went wide and classmate Tara Dickson (Sussex, NJ) missed a golden opportunity when her direct kick from the top of the box slid just wide of the post.

"I knew it was going to be a close game," said Panther coach Rebecca Lisack. "Our first touch was off in the first half, but we calmed down in the second half and started playing."
