KEENE, NH 10/2/01 - Jason Lombardo (Woburn, MA.) had two goals
including the game-winner with 1:02 to play to give the Keene State
College men's soccer team a 2-1 non-conference victory over Babson
College Tuesday in Keene.
It was the fifth win in the last six games for KSC (7-3). Babson
falls to 7-4. Selected as the LEC rookie of the week for the third
time this season on Monday, Lombardo scored the go-ahead goal when
he flicked a header into the net, deflecting a long shot by
defender Dermottt O'Sullivan (North Salem, NY).
'I was just at the right place at the right time,' said the
Owls' freshman striker of his team-leading eighth goal of the
season. 'He (O'Sullivan) was just trying to get the ball on net and
I was fortunate to get a piece of the ball.'
Lombardo gave the Owls a 1-0 lead when he was sent in by Joey
Amaio (Wethersfield, CT) with 10 minutes to play in the first half.
Babson controlled play in the second half and finally got the
equalizer when Jonah Frisch slid the ball into the far corner past
KSC goalie D.J.
Nordmark (South Windsor, CT) 12 minutes into the half. Despite
their decided edge in play, the Beavers fell victim to a rare
counter-attack by the Owls that resulted in the game winner with
time running out.
'We were very lucky,' Lombardo added. 'Our defense kept us in
the game.' Nordmark and Babson goalie Nick Tod (North Andover, MA.)
each had three saves in the game.
It was the first meeting between the two teams since the 1986
season.
KSC host LEC rival Plymouth State (3:30 p.m) on Saturday.
