KEENE, N.H. (10/30/01) - Junior forward Suzanne Heinkel
(Westfield, N.J.) had two goals to lead the Keene State College
women's soccer team to a 3-0 victory over Anna Maria College in a
quarterfinal ECAC Division III Tournament game played Wednesday in
Keene.
The top seed in the tournament, Keene State (18-5) will host
fourth seed M.I.T. (14-5) in a semifinal game at Owl Stadium
Complex on Saturday at 1 p.m.
After hitting posts and crossbars with 28 first half shots, the
Owls were finally able to cash in on a pair of goals by Heinkel.
Heinkel deflected a shot from Jennifer Ortisi (Allenstown, NH) past
Amcat goalie Alli Pincince (Uxbridge, MA.) to give KSC a 1-0 lead
at the 31:38 mark. Six minutes later, Heinkel got her second of the
game and seventh of the season when she headed in a crossing shot
by Beth Vachon (Amherst, NH).
"They were big goals because they got us going," said Heinkel.
"We could have had a lot more goals, but we're happy with what we
got."
Celena Chickering (Keene, NH) completed the scoring 1:30 into
the second half when she put a crossing pass into the net. Amy
Lamson (Bridgewater, MA.) and Vachon got assists on the play.
KSC goalie Michelle Mason (Fairport, NY) made just one save to
notch her 12th shutout of the season. Pincince had a busy game in
goal for the Amcats with 15 saves. Anna Maria completes its season
with a 14-7-1 record.
After losing first round games the past two seasons, the Owls
are happy about advancing in the Tournament. "It feels really
good," Heinkel added. "If we can't go to nationals, this is the
second best thing. We'll take it. We're hoping for the big win in
the ECACs."
KSC, which defeated Anna Maria 5-0 earlier this season, had a
decided edge in play with a 50-2 shot advantage.
