CANTON, N.Y. 11/10/01 - The Keene State College 2001 men's soccer season came to a disappointing end with a 2-0 loss to Norwich University in the semifinals of the NCAA Division III Northeast Regional Tournament at St. Lawrence University in Canton New York on Saturday.
Keene State, which entered the Tournament with a 13 game winning streak, concludes its season with an 18-4 record. Norwich (21-0) moves on to face host and 2nd-ranked St. Lawrence in the championship game on Sunday.
The Owls dodged a bullet in a scoreless first half. The Cadets had the better of the scoring opportunities, but KSC goalie D.J. Nordmark was equal to the task keeping Norwich off the scoreboard.
Norwich went ahead 1-0 on a goal four minutes into the second half. Nordmark got a piece of Ryan Quintal's shot, but not enough as it went into the net.
Later in half, the Cadets took a 2-0 lead on a goal by Tim Kyrkostas.
The Owls had a couple of good chances to score in the second half. Justin Lombardo was taken down just outside the box at the 32:45 mark, but a close range direct kick by Robby Carson sailed left. Minutes later, John Harke's, header hit the left post.
Nordmark, who finished with nine stops, kept the Owl close with saves on the Cadets' Jason Grow and Rick Anthony.
"Our backs were really exploited today and our midfielders never got into the game," said KSC Coach Ron Butcher. "We just had a general breakdown. For some reason they were taking this team to lightly."
The 18 wins by the Owls are the best victory mark since the 1991 season.
