KEENE, N.H.. 9/5/01 - Freshman Casey Banks (Westborough, MA.),
had two goals, his first two collegiate tallies, to lead Keene
State College to a 3-0 men's soccer victory over Springfield
College at Owl Stadium Complex on Wednesday.
It was the 2001 home season opener for KSC (2-1) and the first
game played under the lights at the Owls new grass field.
Springfield drops to 2-1.
Banks was at the right place at the right time for the first
goal. He picked a lose ball in the crease and tapped it by Pride
goalie Derek Bostic to give KSC a 1-0 lead 12 minutes into the
game. Taking a through ball form Mike Monterio (Hudson, MA.), Trill
fired in a shot from 10-yards out for his second goal of the game
seven minutes later. 'It was a great feeling,' said Banks. First
game home, starting as a freshman and getting a couple of goals -
it doesn't get any better than that.'
Fransico Vasconcelos scored his first goal as an Owl, an
insurance goal in the closing minutes of play. 'Its nice to be home
and play a good game,' said KSC Coach Ron Butcher. I thought we
played 70 good minutes. It was a good win for us, Springfield is a
very hard-working team.'
Goalie D.J. Nordmark (South Windsor, CT) made two saves to notch
his second shutout of the season and the 12th of his career. He got
help from Luke Trill (Northfield, MA.) late in the first half, when
the freshman kicked away an open ball in the crease after Nordmark
made the initial save off the foot of the Prides Mike Russo.
Bostic (Naugatuk, R.I.) finished with four saves for
Springfield.
Keene State (will play a key non-conference game on Saturday (1
p.m.) at Wheaton College.
