'KEENE, NH 10/1/02 - Second half goals by Nick Ferro
(Fiskedale, MA.) and John Harke (Northampton, MA.) lifted Keene
State College to a 2-1 upset victory over Williams College in a
non-conference men's soccer game played in Keene on Tuesday.
It was the first win in four previous games for KSC (7-4)
against Williams. Williams ranked 10thth nationally and
second in New England falls to 4-2.
Jason Lombardo (Woburn, MA.) had the best scoring
opportunity for KSC in a scoreless first half, when his shot hit
off the inside crossbar with 3:35 to play. Earlier Amherst's
Khari Stephenson misfired on a partial breakaway.
Just inserted into the Owls' starting line-up, Ferro took a lead
pass behind the Eph's defense from Jim Hogan (Plymouth, N.H.)
dribbled in and beat goalie Nick Armington (Wenham, MA.) with a
shot to the far corner.
KSC added a key insurance goal 11 minutes later when Justin
Hickman (Mont Vernon, N.H.) drove a long ball into the box. Flying
in from the right side, John Harke (Northampton, MA.) tipped the
ball into the top of the net to make it 2-0.
Then Owls were able to preserve the two-goal lead when Dermott
O'Sullivan stopped a shot by Stephenson with Owl goalie D.J.
Nordmark (So. Windsor, CT) out of position.
Williams cut the lead in half with 11minutes to play when Ryan
Olsen (Norwell, MA.) headed in a corner kick from Alex Blake. Blake
later hit the cross bar with 5:30 to play. but KSC was able to hang
on for the win.
Nordmark finished with five saves for KSC while Armington
stopped two shots for the Ephs.
KSC will host Southern ME in a homecoming game on Saturday (3:30
p.m.).
