Owl Baseball Team Splits Pair In Florida

COCOA BEACH, FLA. 3/17/02 - The Keene State College baseball team began its Spring Week trip by splitting a pair of games on Sunday at Cocoa Beach Expo in Florida.  After opening up with an 8-6 win over Oneonta (NY) State, the Owls lost 7-4 to Western Maryland College 7-4 later in the day. The games (sunny 85 degrees) were played under ideal conditions.

"I was very pleased how we played," said KSC Coach Ken Howe, whose team improves to 4-1.  "We came out and took advantage of a team's mistakes in the first game (Oneonta had six errors).  And in the second game, we battled back and had our chances, but couldn't get the key hit."

A throwing error on an attempted pick-off enabled KSC to score three runs in the second inning to go up 3-2 in the opener.  Following the miscue, Mike Messeur (Warwick, RI) and Nick Bujeaud (Lincoln, NH) delivered run producing hits.

With the scored tied 3-3, the Owls went ahead for good with a four run fourth inning.  The inning features two hit batters, two errors, a walk and a sacrifice fly by Kelly Charbono.  (Enfield, NH).  John Trubiano (Keene, NH) had a couple of hits, including a RBI single in the fifth inning.

Despite giving up six runs and nine hits, Buzzy Francis (Bedford, NH) got his second win (2-0) of the season.  He had two strikeouts and a walk in five plus innings.  Ben Tyer (Lee, MA.) allowed just one hit and had two strikeouts in the final two innings to gain the save.

Keene State played catch up all day against Western Maryland.  Down 4-0 after one inning, the Owls got two runs back in the third on an error following a sacrifice fly by Tyer.  Trailing 7-2, KSC got their finals runs in the sixth on RBI hits from Justin Hickman (Mont Vernon, NH) and Doug Morse (Newport, NH).

Starter Nick Wirkkala (Lempster, NH) (0-1) struggled in his three innings allowing all seven runs.   Jim Slack (Manchester, NH) had an impressive outing in relief. He pitched three scoreless innings of one-hit ball with five strikeouts and one walk.  Howe plans on moving the freshman into the rotation.

KSC plays Pikeville College (Div. I NAIA) on Monday.
