Struggling Owls Lose Two In Florida

COCOA BEACH, FLA. 3/22/02 - The Keene State College baseball team saw its losing streak reach six games after loses to Western Maryland University (13-1) and UMA-Lowell (10-1) on Friday at Cocoa Beach, Florida.

Struggling at the plate the Owls (4-6) mustered just five hits in the two games.

Keene State went up 1-0 against Western Maryland.  Josh Coughlin (Keene, NH) had a RBI single following a double by Ben Tyer (Lee, MA.).

Nick Bujeaud (Lincoln, NH) and freshman Brian Roberge (Concord, NH) had the other hits for KSC.

Starter Jim Slack (Manchester, NH), who gave up five runs, lasted just 1  2/3 innings.  Andy Cuthbertson (Lafargeville, NY) was also ineffective giving up eight runs in his 4 1/3 innings of work on the mound.

Things got worse for the Owls, who managed just one hit against UMA-Lowell, a Division II Word Series team last season.

The River Hawks' Dave Williamson had his no-hit bid come to end in the top of the seventh inning when Eric Kilburn (Keene, NH) doubled scoring Coughlin, who had reached on an error. Williamson, who attended Manchester-West, pitched two years ago for the Keene Swamps Bats and last season for the Concord Quarry Dogs of NECBL.

KSC Coach Ken Howe used three pitchers: Patrick Austin (Wallingford, CT), Greg Rice (Bristol, Me.) and Nick Wirkkala Lempster, NH).  Wirkkala had a strong outing give up just one hit and striking out four in two plus innings.

"Were playing some quality teams, but we're just not hitting the ball," said Howe.  Other teams are making the plays they need to win, and we're not doing that."

Keene State's final Spring week game is against Oneonta State on Saturday.
