Owls Defeat Framingham St. 10-5 In Season Opener

Northeastham, MA. 3/8/02 - The Keene State College baseball team opened its season with a come-from-behind10-5 victory over Framingham State College in a game played Saturday at Nuaset High School in Northeastham, MA.

Trailing 5-2 after five innings, the Owls went ahead with a five-run sixth inning.  With the bases loaded, Nick Bujeaud (Lincoln, N.H.) knocked in a run with a single to make it 5-3, and John Trubiano (Keene, NH) then cleared the bases with a triple to put the Owls on top 6-5.  Trubiano later came around to score on a wild pitch. KSC added a single run in the seventh and two more in the eighth inning.

Owl starter Nick Wirkkala (Lempster, NH) pitched the first three innings giving up five runs (three earned) with two strikeouts and a walk.  Buzzy Francis (Bedford, N.H. pitched six scoreless innings of three hit ball with seven strikeouts and no walks to notch his first win of the season.

Travis Muckle (Bennington, Vt.), Kelly Charbono (Enfield, N.H.) and Bujeaud each finished the game with two hits each.

KSC played Saturday's game under sunny skies and 60 degree temperature.  A far cry from last year when they didn't get on the field up north until April  7th. "It was nice to finally get outside," said KSC Ken Howe.  "We were ripping the ball during batting practice yesterday and that carried over to today's game.

"I thought we showed some character coming back," he added.  "After going ahead, we didn't sit back, but scored a few more runs."

The Owls will wrap up their Cape Cod trip with a pair of games on Sunday, facing St. Michael's College at 12:15 p.m. and Franklin Pierce at 5 p.m.

The team will leave for its annual Florida trip on March 17 at Cocoa Beach Expo.
